Deb
Hi again! I now have five guppies in my tank (since Saturday) and the water has been changed by 30% everyweek because I can't seem to get clear looking water. It looks greenish/yellowish and I think it could be the bogwood? Any suggestions please? (It looks not too bad the day I change the water but 2 days later - yuck). Also the guppies (3 male & 2 female) are very persistently chasing around the big female. At first the big male was bullying the smaller male who I felt sorry for but now two of the older males hassle the female  Is this just part of tank life? Will try and attach picture. ... no sorry don't know how to do that - please help!
Bluetom
I would say its the wood if the water is just turning an off color, the best thing to do is get some high-grade carbon for your filter. Some filters have optional carbon inserts otherwise you can buy it buy the box and put some in with the other filter material in your filter. The carbon does need to be change every couple of months to prevent the build up of toxins going back into the tank. As for the chasing the males were probably just finding there place in the pecking order, you really need to have a 3:1 ratio females to males, this spreads out the males desires between all the females. Hope this helps.

Caper
Hi Deb Is this just part of tank life I have a thread here about my fishies...ah...acting...um..weird! I have 1 male guppy, 1 male platy, who keep chasing another male platy...I wouldn't say they are being aggressive in a "mean" way...but I think they have the "hots" for him  8)
klaymann
sounds like your fish are suffering from pofta-itis ... what is in the water up there ...and are the local guys acting the same?? .... but seriously throw some females in the tank, ratio... 3 fem / 1 male
Caper
pofta-itis  What the heck is that? The water....hmmm...considering I only live a 5-10 minute walk from Canada's worst toxic site...you never know    I do have one female platy (who was a male when I got it) that they don't bother with...and I do not want baby fishies...so I'm trying to steer clear of mixing males & females. Pegasus
Deb said: Will try and attach picture. ... no sorry don't know how to do that - please help! Look under the NZ Website section Deb.. there's heaps of info there. I can't seem to get clear looking water. It looks greenish/yellowish and I think it could be the bogwood? Any suggestions please? (It looks not too bad the day I change the water but 2 days later - yuck). Definitely sounds like the bogwood. Take it out and boil it on the barbie.. then rinse off and boil it again until the tannis are leached out of it. Takes quite a time, but it will eventually come right. If your water is "yellowish" as you say, I would check the pH doesn't get too low.
Caper
Yep...Canada's worst toxic site...infamously known as the "tar ponds"...the result of many, many, years of steel making! Sorry...off topic!
