nickyboi
Ever since putting the fish in the new 250L they Elec Yellows have become VERY shy, they will only really come out when the light goes off and all the fish seem to hide from the light, its quite minimal at the moment as I'm still building the roof for the cabinet and light housing so just has my old light on there at the mo, however they seem to hate it, even when eating, have become really "scatty". I make note that it was the light they've always had on the previous tank Also the tank takes about 48 hours to get rid of the murkiness now after a water change and the hosing on the intake pipe for the canister filter is quite "soiled" and has a brownish film inside it, I do make note again this tank has only been running for about a week. I understand I have to let this tank cycle but im worried it could be filthy in the canister already and wonder if its why the water stays filthy for so long, is it worth cleaning? I have been testing the water every 12 hours, and Nitrates have been steady at around 5ppm, Nitrites between 0 and 0.25ppm Ammonia between 0 and 0.25ppm, and the pH steady at 8. What the heck is goin on!
BK
Bigger tank= filter taking longer to process extra volume. Brown slime on up take= more ligth hitting it than prevoius tank. I have plenty of this brown slime in/on my Discus tank up take but does'nt seem to effect them. Put a sponge filter in to see what happens. Sorry don't know anything about "rife Lakes" but Herefishyfishy commented in another post that a lot of these guys only eat alge so the slime could be a bonus. nickyboi
Update on the new tank saga, Just went home and found all the fish swimming around happily, some scatter tho when I move around the tank so presume its normal. The water is looking a little green now! There is also a white film on all the suction cups holding parts in place and on a few other things, I think it might be the new fish food I am feeding them (frenchies recipe, fish love it, however tank started to get really dirty since feeding it) So I will pull the canister filter apart when I get home and make sure its not clogged with something foul and that the media is setup the way it should be, hopefully will clear the water up! nickyboi
Another update, sorry to bother, just hoping for some input. Cleaned out the canister filter, to find it full of a strange white/cream substance, in flakes everywhere and covering the black seals, its the same film that has taken over the black suction caps in the tank. The only thing I have added to the water is stress coat only because I dont have anything to remove chlorine and had some of this stuff, apparently it removes the rubbish from the tap water. Mind you I used it in the old tank and never had this problem. I also removed all the air stones in there and hope that the filter will take care of this horrible looking water shortly! Any ideas? Also I think the tank must have cycled as Amm and Nitrites very low and Nitrates at about 5 since day two, I did use gravel from the old tank too and the same ornaments/plants + 30 odd litres of the old tank water and ran the old filter for a day. Worked a treat if its cycled in less than a week!
nickyboi
Newest update on the tank saga... Got up yest morn to find water even dirtier and greener than ever! I came to the conclusion it was the new fish food I had used! Fish seemed to love it, but man the waste it left behind is horrible! So did an 80% water change and took out ALL the gravel and cleaned it, scrubbed everything down. I dont care if I disrupted the cycle, its better than putting up with that mess and ever dirty water. The sludge everywhere MUST have been that gelatine!!! Frozen or not, its bound to do that! So now im waiting, (25 hours so far) for the tank to settle. The quality of water has improved considerably however its far beyond crystal, still little tiny bits of goodness knows what floating through the water. Heres hoping it clears up like the old tank. Looking forward to crystal clear!!!
polgara
Its normal for a new tank to stay murky for a few days but we've never had as much trouble as you have... anything in your water or something that could have cause an algae bloom in your tank? And electric yellows are naturally shy fish untill you have a lot of fish in there then they will come out. Ours are in a tank by themselves and they are quite skitterious but if we put them in the community tank they are perfectly fine.
nickyboi
Fish are fine now, put a new tankmate in for them, they love him. But the only only thing I put in the tank that i'm pretty sure buggered it up is that recipe for fish food. 1KG Shrimp, heads, legs, eggs and all 1KG Green Peas Spiruline Powder Kids multivit Gelatine Never again Damn tank went green and horrible after feeding just a little bit. Thats all I can think of. Hopefully got rid of most of it in the huge clean, so will be able to tell in a couple of days if it clears up or not. nickyboi
Update.. Tank looking a little clearer, got some B-Clear for LFS, however that hasnt done much good, tank is no longer green looking anymore but still a little murky/white, even after two doses of this product! Rinsed all the filter media in some tank water in a bucket and cleaned out the hoses that were lined with a light brown goo that smelt like compost! Had to do another 50% water change to try and rid the murkiness however still the same. PH 8, Amm - 0, nitrite - 0, nitrate - 5 Been told you use Magi Clear now. I wonder if this will work or will be another waste of money on useless chemicals in my tank!
