nickyboi
I want to breed my pair, I'm quite sure im going to need more than one female tho! Other than that, any other ways to encourage them to "do it" apart from increasing pH, and dropping water level?
nickyboi
I am looking for another female to go wif mine. Ditto man, however the shops are selling them (where I can find them at least!) for like 25-25 bucks and they dont look very healthy and have come from a mother that was forced to spit the fry (not good)

Faran
Just got a male and 3 females of these a couple weeks ago. Great fish, REALLY looking forward to breeding them!
nickyboi
if u dont mind mate, how much per fish? just to compare to these horrible auck prices for horrible fish!
Faran
They cost $25 each in the stores, but there's a few breeders around that sell them for $10 each. I got it from the guy that originally sold them to chama527 on TradeMe. His name is "bulldog" on these forums and you could possibly PM him but it won't offset shipping unless you want a few. Oh, if u think Auck prices are harsh, try coming down to WGTN!

herefishiefishie
apart from increasing pH, and dropping water level? I can't say that I have heard that one before. Yellows work best in colonies,(the more the merrier) so yes try & find more females. I had a colony of 20 Yellows, ratio? Bought mainly privately. Now downsized colony to 8, have bred a few times. for like 25-25 bucks and they dont look very healthy and have come from a mother that was forced to spit the fry (not good) $15 in shops here. What is wrong with stripping females, I do this at 2 weeks. This way the fry are free swimming & that way the female dosen't lose to much condition either. Some breeders strip at day dot, & tumble the eggs in a strainer, till they are free swimming. Frenchy
nickyboi
Heya mate, I have read in quite a few places that doing a water cycle and dropping the level of water can encourage it. Also I didnt mean increase the pH, more so to have it at optimal which some people reckon is around 8.2, I must have been thinking of my tank at the time lol  I forget the hardness. In regards to stripping females I have also read and been told that stripping a female can increase her chances if young when done, to spit the eggs before ready, the young apparently have a higher chance of also "loosing the eggs" early. I dunno how much of it is true, because I have only read most of this, although the websites seem quite credible. However the guy on this website, who seems to know what he's up to, does it often and dsnt make any mention of it. http://www.cichlidae.com/tanks/t049.php Interesting, all I want are some more!
HandS
I got 5 not long ago (2m, 3f) and put them in with my BGK's, Angels and bolivan rams (was told it would be ok short term) until i set up a african tank, and i have a female holding with the ph of 6.5 and all seem to be happy . Freakyfish
Hey guys ive found the more the merrier with the electris yellows A regular of mine has a colony of around 45 to 50 keeps him busy he also prefers to strip the females as this does help keep them in great condition Ive heard before that some people think that stripping them does affect the youngs ability to hold the eggs when they mature but as far as i know no studies have been done Try and keep a good ratio of males to females as the male will harass the holding girls and this can stress her out and force her to eat the eggs A water cycle should help them breed as i notice my colony are alot more active straight after water changes though im the same as Justin never heard of dropping water levels but if it works lol keep it going Brad
