leeves
Im interested in peoples experiences with schooling tetras... I have heard/read/seen that the silver tip tetra is good as it schools in a nice tight group. Im thinking of getting a big group of some kind for my new large tank which I also intend to plant out. As I am finding at the moment that a large group of schooling fish and maybe one or two mid sized chichlids would be nice. any ideas?
macka
I'd recommend rummynoses or cardinal tetras as they tend to stay in a really tight group, and are extremly colourful. But the price is a little on the high side. Bleeding hearts are another tight schooling tetra, and there cousin the rosy tetra is just as good and only about $4-$5 a fish. Currently there is a tetra called the purple tetra which are quite nice. Dont get neons as they just dont school together that well and are maybe to social. Silvertips are nice as the copper and yellow tones are bueatiful but as a friend found out the males are quite aggresive against each other during mating conditions. He says always have more females then males 3:1 ratio I think
leeves
thanks for that I already have neons so ah yeah... any ideas about the the black phantom tetra? was that purple tetra you mentioned the purple emperor tetra - they sound expensive... diamond tetras - Moenkausia pittieri look pretty 8) ... they also expensive? bleeding hearts sounds like a winner i think. they have got that attractive fin going on thats for sure. macka
No the purple tetra is not a type of emperor tetra, its species name is Hyphessobrycon metae. Is similar shape to the black neon but is purple, it grows to 5cm and is a peaceful schooler ph under 7 and soft water i think the price is around the $7 mark so they are a little dear. The black phantom is a another nice tetra but i'd prefer the red phantom myself, it is another good schooling tetra and around $5 each. As for the diamond tetra I'm not really a fan but its a bigger sized tetra, sorry dont know much about it. What about congo tetras? they are a relly nice fish and are rather big and would cope in with medium sized cichlids. Bleeding hearts show there best colours in peaty waters and subdued lighting, the rosy is the same but lacks the heart shape botch on the body. Mind you though there is many nice tetras out there and everyones taste is different Let me know what you go with
macka
OOOps forgot the lemon tetra they are nice when they are older, in the shops they dont show there nice yellow colour, so dont be put of if they look plan and they are cheap $2 each I recall
Pegasus
Not a tetra of course, but for schooling, a good quantity of Tiger Barbs takes some beating.
macka
Beating who though yeah i agree only in large schools so they pick at each other or harass the females insteed of other longfinned fish. Mind you though i kept 5 with my discus for a while with no real problems. Found a fish that hates tiger barbs, a six barred distichodus. Added it to the tank and was swimming around with them then when i got home from work it had beat the hell out of them, so i moved it and the tigers are still a little shy, got some of own back i think, as for the wolf in sheeps clothing is now in the discus tank and thinks hes a clown loach :-? it has problems. leeves
what about the glow light tetra they any good?
Goldie
I found them excellent. Also the head and tail light tetras. My neons school well. I have at least 20 plus If they get under 10 they hide.
mickey-tropical-fish-mad
I used to keep rummy noses they shool down the bottom of the tank but are extremly sensitive to water changes!
Cath
For a large tank I don't think you can go past Congo Tetras, they are beautiful. Bill is right about the little tiger barbs and they would be fine with bigger fish.
jude
Again, its not a tetra, but I love the harlequin rasboras and they school well. Cheers Jude
Cath
Another awesome schooling fish which is not a Tetra is the little corydoras, they play all day. You could get the dear little bandit cats or the panda cats...
