I've seen similar patches while diving in Palau and the Cayman Islands during unusually low tides, but that reef just goes on foooorrrrrreeeeevvvvveeeerrrrrrr.... Just this morning I found myself standing in the shower (where I do most of my thinking) wondering how you could introduce some limoited tidal rise and fall in a reef tank.
