mbuna
Hi,Can somebody help?We are running an Aqua One 620 (90L) set up for Malawis circa 8.2 PH and 16 GH.We have Aragonite and Coral Rock to do so.The problem is we have a build up of brown algae type formation on the tank walls and the coral.I have a feeling the problem may be caused by the type of light tube of which there are two(standard A/One)If it is not harmful can live with it, but is it?Any help appreciated.Cheers Brian.S
Caryl
My Malawi tank is full of dark red/brown algae and green cyano so very colourful. No plants to compete with the algae. I just wipe it off the front glass and leave it everywhere else. The fish like to nibble on it and at least you know they have something to eat if you go away for a few days BTW my tank (280L) has 4 bright white fluoros. mbuna
Thanks Caryl, had`nt had this before, feel better now I know it`s not harmful.Regards Brian.
HummingBird
As Caryl suggested, some plants, even just some java fern or java moss, would out-compete the algae for nutrients and prevent it growing. I never had a problem with Brown algae before I set up my rock-only cichlid tank, because all my other tanks are planted, but I put some moss in it a couple of weeks ago and the algae has noticibily gone down, not entirely disappeared but it's definately not as noticable as before. malawi_man
hi, i would suggest getting some adult bristle noses, these do a superb job in cleaning african cichlid tanks and dont get too big. otherwise just clean it off, i hardly ever get algae in african tanks anyway maybe bceause of pH?? and yes i am the guy you got the male electric yellows off. thanx Daniel
mbuna
 Hi Ho young Daniel.Yes I know who you are,who can forget an empty bag full of wet water. Thanks for your suggestion re Bristlenoses.Query? Can you expand on lack of algae in your tanks,I thought you were running 8 PH,or is it the coral to increase hardness that may be the problem?Hows my favourite 800L tank? Cheers Brian.S.
malawi_man
i hardly ever get it, i dont normally leave the lights on my tank on, only when feeding etc. well i do keep them on on my planted tank cos it has plants. for pH a bit of stocking with aragonite in it in all of the canister filters, otherwise just baking soda occasionally to raise pH. 800litre tank is going fine thanx, male duboisi was trying to breed with his invisible friend today, maybe he was practising  btw about the water (i sent him home with a bag of water instead of a bag of water with and electric yellow male) how the the yellows going btw. and let me know if you have any fish for sale. are those lelupi going good as well?? mbuna
Hi again Daniel,Yes yellows are doing fine, leilupis went into daughters tank in Auckland prior to coming down here but she likes them so much she won`t let me take them.Sorry to outbid you on those tangs, shot myself in the foot really considering I paid heaps for them but still don`t have them.Behave yourself Brian.S. Bluetom
i know lots disagree with me but i put a chineese algae eater into my malawi tank, clen of brown algae in two or three days. They apparently get quite aggressive but that should be fine with malawi for tank mates.
malawi_man
i have two SAE's in my 800litre tank (forgot to ad that) but i am still going to try and get some synos for eating uneaten food/ let me know if/when your daughter wants to sell them. no harm done in out bidding me, it was probably better for me anyway. 8)
