lduncan
I have a culture. In terms of maintenance, it is daily / every other day feeding, and removal of a portion, replacing with fresh saltwater. The idea is to make sure the culture container remains uncontaminated, and that the culture does not become so dense that it suffocates. Brianemone
do you feed the part you take out to your tank?? and replace it with saltwater from the tank or do you need a fresh supply of asw?
Pies
Fresh saltwater to top it off. Most people use tank water, having microwaved it first. Pies
lduncan
I used asw, not really a fan of putting tank water in the microwave The key is, it has to be sterile, any sort of prey organism and your phyto culture will crash. I don't like the idea of feeding phyto into a reef tank, i've got a skimmer to try and get rid of that sort of stuff. I had it running to breed banggers. Brianemone
i like the idea of supplimental feeding for corals, adding back abit of what the skimmer is taking out
chimera
use cyclop-eeze, take the hassle out of it
lduncan
i like the idea of supplimental feeding for corals, adding back abit of what the skimmer is taking out Not for my tank. It's just adding uncessary nutrients. You should be more concerned with removing this sort of stuff if you're keeping acros. Layton
Brianemone
what about zooplankton? would it be more benifitial doseing zooplankton that are full of the phyto?
reef
I beleive feeding corals helps. i still have goniopras, cataphyllias, and without feeding they would not survive, I alternate beween several foods. It is quite noticable that corals have improved since feeding.
Brianemone
what coral foods do you add reef?
lduncan
acros have different requirements to most LPS which tend to prefer to be closer to sandy substrates where phosphate fluxes are higher. Water quality to keep acros and other sps in top shape is different to the quality needed for other corals. I don't think acros need to be feed on top of what already exists in the tank. And that it is more detrimental than benificial to tank conditions you're trying to achieve. However if you have predominately soft corals and LPS, feeding can be benifical, if not necessary. reef
what coral foods do you add reef? I feed reef booster and reef solution. I only use 1/2 of what is recommended. as you can overdo it which will cause algae Only feed every 5 days . So far the feedback from reef booster has been outstanding as everyone has noticed that corals respond to it. I also not that the reef booster is great for gut loading brine shrimp. http://www.prodibio.fr/anglais/reefbooster.htm http://www.ecosystemaquarium.com/html/reef.html
Pies
I have prodominatly SPS in my tank. I feed the corals/tank in Salifert Coral Food & cyclopezze. What layton was saying is mostly correct. Its going to be hard to get the good colour with high nutrients, so by adding nutrients you are working backwards not fowards. Pie
