cracker
Before we answer this, you should probably explain your setup. This slime algae may be due to poor water turnover, or lighting conditions. What system are you running and what size? Cheers
chimera
dont use any chemical products. fix the cause of the problem and it will eventually go away. for the meantime, keep physically syphoning it out (it should peel off, dont scrub it off or it will become worse). your tank is probably about 4-6 months old? generally it starts coming on after brown algae. most importantly increase water flow within your main tank. here is the cyano i had about a year ago. reef
Bio digest will help to reduce waste in the tank, however you will have to check your water quality. what are your levels, nitrate, phostphate etc.
warick hearn
Your right my tank is about 6 months old...and i would rather find out what the problem is instead of throwing something in the tank that might distroy everything....apart from the red algie the tank (seems ) fine.....even my clowns are breeding....I did a 130 litre water change yesterday and after a bit of observing the system am going to add another pump into the tank as there is a dead area down one end...(the overflow end).the tank is 5 foot long by 2 feet by 2 feet. The sump is 3 foot by 1.5 feet wide.running a protein skimmer...11 watt uv and an returning water to the tank at 3420 litres an hour.apart from that I have one pump in one corner pushing water up one end and another pump down behind the rocks....im gona put the pump thats down (behind) the rocks up high in the other corner of the tank pushing water in the other direction.and then go buy another pump to add to the tank. And maybe do another waterchange next week.Am I on the right track?? Warick.

Brianemone
dont buy anymore pumps before you look into alternatives, like tunze streams or seio's, they pump alot more water for the price and give a better type of flow. powerhead type pumps will only give intense flow in one small part of the tank, where as a tunze or seio distribrutes it very evenly over a greater area
chimera
Am I on the right track?? yes. time, patience and common sense will help cure it. you're going through the stage that alot of people get frustrated with and give up - i hear that cyano is a big cause of people giving up the hobby! keep persisting and you'll be sweet. also - do as brian says above and look at streams (expensive/awesome) or seio's (cheaper/good), they're designed for much wider flow than your typical powerhead so get movement into most areas well. Thanx guys Warick.
lduncan
Do you use natural seawater or salt mix? Talk to "reef" on this board, he is the agent for Tunze in NZ(www.aqua.net.nz). Layton

wasp
Warwick, having red slime (cyano bacteria) is all about having too many nutrients in the tank of a type that make the cyano grow. To get it sorted, keep that skimmer working at max, and syphon as much cyano as you can, as often as you can. When you syphon it, you remove both it, and the nutrients that are in it, thus stopping re-growth, although it may take a while to stop the re-growth. Also do not over feed and add unnessecary suppliments. Good flow is part of the battle because it will blow the cyano into suspension to allow it to be skimmed, but mostly just keep stubbornly and persistently skimming and syphoning, you will win the battle. This next one is controversial, but try chucking 10 or 15 mls of vodka in the tank. (I joke not, it often works).
