cracker
Anybody running these skimmers and do not know the difference between hi flow and lo flow from there AQUABEE skimmer pumps, I have some information you may require to enable you to get 200% better skimming. PM me!
chimera
so the smaller model turbo skimmers then. the medium/large ones run eheims. if there is a performance enhancement for these too do tell - actually, why not just post. would be interested to know either way. chimera
well cracker? interestingly my deltec turbo skimmer (eheim pumps) was making a hell of a noise when I checked the sump room tonight. it was a constant banging noise, as if the impeller had come loose. i pulled the skimmer to bits and found a solid build up of calcum carbonate (?) in one of the air intakes just prior to the pump which was blocking all air to it. not sure how long it had been like this for (although recent skimmate levels still appeared to be consistent). i had only cleaned the skimmer about 2 months ago so was surprised the build up was so fast? perhaps a reminder to others to check their intakes etc are performing optimally? Ira
The only thing I can think he might be referring to is the aquabee pumps, like my MCE600 has, have a little flap that flips one way or another depending on which direction the impeller decides to spin. That way it always pumps well. But if that gets jammed it won't flip so the pump won't pump as much. But...this is far from a secret, it says pretty much that in the manual... The manual fell open once and I saw it...I didn't RTFM, honest, that would be unmanly!
cracker
I been busy, just bought five acres and going to build new house in January! Yeah, that is what I was talking about. The aquabee skims when the aquabee is working in both directions. It is imperative that the intake air hose and tap are in PERFECT working order or the Correct direction will overskim and make a mess. However if you run it in the under powered mode it still skims ok, but you have less control and its skimmate production is limited. I was skimming wrong for 6 months!!! You should see it now! Skimming around 30% more.
scatman
how important is the valve as i have one pump without one. My deltec removes little skimmate -i have just put this down to a low bio load
cracker
VERY important, what model skimmer do you have? and did you buy it new or second hand. I ask that, because sometimes they can be messed around with.
cracker
Chim, it wont be Calcium, it is more likely to be salt. The air intakes should be injected with fresh top off water every now and then to dissolve the salt creep build up. (Injected whilst it is running obviously!!) reef
The air intake valve should be set at 2 oclock, otherwise too much air goes in the skimmer which will cause larger bubbles.
chimera
how important is the valve as i have one pump without one. both my intakes didnt have valves when i got it. with one i use a calcium reactor valve and the other i cut a 3mm piece of the tube off, then cut the 3mm piece long ways, folded it and inserted it into the existing tube reducing the tubes diameter by about 1/2. that certainly helped, you could literally see how much finer the bubbles were. scatman - i'll check it for you when im over next to pick up those pods
Ira
Now that you mention it, I haven't actually cleaned the air hose and stuff on mine lately...I think I'll give that a try today...
lduncan
Chim, it wont be Calcium, it is more likely to be salt. The air intakes should be injected with fresh top off water every now and then to dissolve the salt creep build up. (Injected whilst it is running obviously!!) Some people run their skimmer pumps on timers to turn off for an hour or so every day, so water can back up the venturi and dissolve any calcium/salt deposits, keeping them clear. cracker
no good for aquabee though, it may fire up the wrong way, damn things.
Ira
That's why you make sure the little flap isn't stuck.
