TM
Does anyone know who makes a 250w electronic ballast. I can get 150w in a osram, thorn and phillips but none of these guys produce a 250w version. I can't think of anyone else who would make them. ?????????????????????????? lduncan
Ice cap were the ones I was thinking of too. Venture don't do electronics, just magnetic. Any reason for wanting electronics over magnetic? Layton

Brianemone
arent electronic more efficient in power usage??
lduncan
arent electronic more efficient in power usage?? Sometimes yes, but not necessarily. They are generally less reliable, and crap ones can cause a lot of problems with electrical interference. Layton
reef
electronic ballast are a waste of time as they run the bulbs too hard and they can cause problems with tv, radio etc. I understand that the digital ones are better, but for aquarium purpose normal ballast are the best so far and digital will be ok once the price drops. When i had the 400w electronic ballast they caused problem with my IKS computer and TV. My 14k bulbs which are blue using a normal ballast went white as they were being driven so hard. So electronic ballast are not that great. Spend the extra money on t5S.

TM
What brand of magnetic ballast would be the best then, atco, osram What do you guys use. I need 250w. TM
suphew
I think mine are philips, they seem to work fine. They are old office light ballasts and fittings. If you can do I bit of DIY check out the local building and office furiture recyclers, the ones in Wellington often have them and because they dont really know what they are they can be as low as $5 if they look rough but normally around $25. Just make sure you put in new bulbs, I used the old bulbs to test them then replaced.
reef
You need to get the correct ballast to match bulb as you cant just use any metal halide ballast to run all metal halide bulbs.
suphew
It will be written on the ballast, if you want to run double ended 250w (which is the most common) just look for HQI (I'll check this when I get home) on the ballast.
lduncan
I use Atco 400W ballasts. Lamp Specialists should be able to help you out with the 250's, the only thing is you have to wire up the starter, ballast, and cap yourself. I don't think they come pre assembled in a box.
