Bluetom
Has anybody else experienced this. I am starting to get a brown coating on the shells in my tank, it's not on anything else so i don't think its an algae. Any help would be greatly appreciated
PENEJANE
if your tank is still newish then it is possible that it could be brown algae. I had that all over my two large rocks in my tank before it got to anything else but it didn't take long (about a week if that) before I noticed it on the glass, gravel and other ordaments in the tank. Thats when I got a bristlenose and I haven't had a problem with it since The colour of the aglae that I got was a rusty brown colour. Bluetom
yeah that sounds about right, maybe i'll decrease light and feeding, give the shells a clean and see if it comes back, cheers
Caryl
Why do you have shells in a freshwater tropical tank? Have you checked the pH? Shell will increase the alkalinity.
Bluetom
it's in my african tank so high pH is A ok.
Caryl
OK. My tank went brown also due to algae then I got lots of green and red algae. No plants to provide competition. I also don't do as many water changes as I should so phosphates and stuff is probably sky high which the algae love.
HummingBird
When I first got one of my 4ft tanks I had the same problem. It went away as the tank aged.
