Pegasus
A member on another forum has just had his Kuhlii (sp) loachs breed. Says the young are about 20mm long, and the eggs were green I see there are three entries in the list of bred species in NZ, but no way to find out who bred them, or how they bred. Anyone got any further info ? Species reported Acanthophthalmus kuhlii - Kuhli loach, (added 27-06-02) Acanthophthalmus pangia - Brown/cinnamon Kuhli loach, (added 27-06-02) Acanthophthalmus shelfordi - Golden eel loach, (added 27-06-02) Do we have to be FNZAS Members to find out the breeders ? Caryl
What class do they come under (M, P etc). I went to the breeding site and it lists the fish by species. Once there it tells you who bred them but I can't find any kuhlis
Pegasus
Hi Caryl, Under "Fish Survey"..... second entry. Don't know how you see the breeders names, all I get is the names of fish and "reported" or not.
Rob
The fish survey is just a survey of what fish people have in their tanks - not what fish people have/are breeding. You can get an idea of what has/is being bred in NZ (atleast be Federation members) by going here.

dennis
one other thing why not many ppl try and breed them i gess is they cheep to buy i seen them like for $3.50 i got two in a tank that have been in there for more than 5 years but u do not see them much
Caryl
That fish survey is not just FNZAS members either. People were asked to report if they had seen these fish anywhere in NZ, not if they bred them. It was partially an attempt to get an idea of what fish are actually in the country despite the MAF restrictions. Rob's link takes you to the breeding site I was looking at. marty
breeding these adorale fish is next to imposible, i have 3pr im my tank and apparently we need to inject them with a hormone from a vet! can't remember who told me or what hormone!! i have been trying for years the r suppose to twist and turn together when spawning!! Alan
I don't think they are impossible to breed But I reacon we don't give them deep enough tanks to do their "spiral" and finish mating before they exit the water. This is a common fault with ppl trying to breed sea-horses. Thefemales are definately greentummied whem ready to go with the male not having any of this coloration and of course, a lot slimmer. Mine have spiralled, but the water was less tham 300mm deep. I had no babies, but one day, just one day I may try seriously Alan

Alan
while back on this post Peg. I can inform you that no one in NZ has registered a khulli breeding. Although I have heard of some "smaller" loach found in a com. tank, but not enuf to register. (must have 10 for 30 days) Hee hee, is the drug 'viagra'? Bruce
Rob Said You can get an idea of what has/is being bred in NZ (atleast be Federation members) by going here. Broken link, I thought Kelly had removed that info from his page ages ago? /Bruce
Rob
That's what happens when old discussions get resurrected - that particular post was made in 2002!
ChrisMack
It's a rather funny thing this breeding of Khulli's......everyone here mentions the "spiralling" towards the surface......I was informed once by a local shop, that they had breed some by placing an upturned 1/2 coconut shell in their tank...... Maybe it could just be a case of..."if it happens, it happens" and there is no correct way..... To me, and partially because of their appearance (eel like) I would almost have a guess that their favourite spawning conditions would be deep mud or silt, where they can burrow down.......but hey Im no expert, and no mine havent bred........ antwan
Hello, thought id bring up this old topic. I remember a little while back when i was in the lfs i saw little baby kuhli's in some of the tanks. I asked the owner and they said "some eggs must have got into the filter and spread them throughout the tanks". Just thought id share. P.S these were tiny little ones compared to the ones they were selling and in completely different tanks too, so id say it was a good chance that they bred. Seth
I love these fish I looked on the net for hours for info on how to breed them and What I ended up with was that you need 2 or more and that it seems to happen after a waterchange well sometimes............. I have given up but i have a policy of keeping lots of these little guys in each tank because most of the succselful breeding where with groups as far as I could tell. I know that the 5 I have in my communtiy tank seem to always be together or in pairs traviling about so who knows maybe something will happen one day. BK
I've got six in one tank and one of these is about twice the size of the rest that where all purchased together. I see these guys more often than the Blue Rams in the tank. My girlfriend is willing them to breed so fingers crossed.
HandS
Im shure my kuhli's are spawning in my com tank, the female's have a fat green belly, and three or four hang around the top of the tank (50cm) in dence rotala. The next morning all kuhli's are slim, and all the apistos are very fat, and happy  , one day im gonna try to set up a tank for them and see what happens
