Goldie
Just about to go to bed and of course checked the fish. A lot of water under the angel tank. (1 angel, 2 kribensis, 1 peppered cat fish, 2 clown loaches, one siamese algae eater & 20 neon tetras). Mopped it up and panicked. Slowed the panic down and checked all the glass I could - no obvious leaks. Remembered I had rearranged some plants etc. Maybe I slopped it all over. - surely I would have noticed, I clean up as I go. Had hubby check. He suggested the bottom glass may have crack in the bottom. Tank is level and resting on polystyrene. So it will be night checks. Hubby is home tomorrow so can keep an eye on it. Apologies for the chatting however I do when nervous - This is a nightmare. Just checked again. Definitely seepage.
bobsvinyl
What kind of filtration do you use? I had a problem once with a hang on the back power filter. I had taken the lid off the tank to do some work, and when I put it back it was blocking the overflow just enough to leak down the back of the tank. The first thing I thought was a crack. Good luck and I hope you find the problem quickly.
Goldie
I use a shark 2 which hangs inside the tank. Will check it though and the u/g There was more water on the cupboard top this morning. It is a slow leak if it is a leak. Tank is fuller than normal since my last water change -maybe it is something like that. I will get a chair n climb on so I can check the back and see if something is not drawing the water out. The water level is still high. I am now ringing around some ppl to try and beg borrow a spare tank. 7 am only fishy ppl would understand such early call re an empty tank. Caryl
Try dropping the water level Goldie. If it is fuller than usual you may have a poor seal near the top. Easier than replacing the tank in a hurry. BTW I can't see your avatar anymore. Have you removed it or done something to it? It is also possible you have a small crack in the base
Goldie
Avatar still there Caryl. thanks for the suggestion however I have got the afternoon off work to strip the tank down and check it out. Macka has lent me a tank to temp house some of the fish. Neons, peppered catfish can go in tank with young guppies. clown loaches in with discus. Angel, kribensis, siamese algae eater into the temp tank. wood plants inito discus tank. oh my h oh for a several tank back up. What does everyone else do for such a contingentcy?? Pegasus
Hi Goldie, Sorry to hear about your predicament. Before stripping or emptying the tank, check the seals carefully both front and back. They will show up as a slightly darker colour if they are leaking. Check the rear seals using a mirror. Usually you will spot a seepage of water inside the seam if it's faulty. Also check that it's not just condensation from your hood, as this sometimes leaves seepage on the bottom of the tank. Mark the level of the water and see how much you are losing. Having Discus I would certainly hesitate in stripping the tank. You asked: What does everyone else do for such a contingentcy?? Any wooden box or drawer.. dust bin with rubbish sack liner, will serve as a temporary home if it is lined with polythene and the heater mounted so it doesn't contact the sides or bottom. BTW: I can't see your avatar either, but sort your tank out first.... Good Luck Regards, Bill (Pegasus)
dennis
i can see your avatar fine good luck with the tank
Caryl
Pleased I'm not the only one who only sees an X where your avatar should be! A chillybin also makes a good temporary home, no need to line it either
cat
I cant see the avatar either. Thought it was just my computer playing tricks on me again!! I am paranoid about tanks letting go. Especially the ones inside. As new carpet is going down in Feb/Mar I am taking all the tanks down and putting them up in the shed. Once the carpet is down then I will decide if I want just one tank inside. Cant see me keeping that for long though! Good luck with fixing problem and making sure fishies are all ok in temporary accommodation. Nothing like a holiday so they say
ajbroome
Cat said... > I cant see the avatar either. Me neither. > ... then I will decide if I want just one tank inside. I set up my first inside tank in years, on Sunday. An ugly hex I'd been given a while back but it looks OK with a bit of work and the long finned whiteclouds are much easier to keep an eye on in there BTW: Got a couple of fry coming on, too early to tell if they're long-finned or not, but all the adult fish are... Goldie
Thanks everyone, Caryl, Pegasus, ajbroome, cat, dennis, bobsvinyl. The tank is now in the repair shop - fish all in their temp homes & doing well. The two clown loaches are checking out the four resident clown loaches - hopefully they will all party and hang out together peacefully. Big thanks to Macka for loan of temp tank. Oh while at the glaziers I happened to order another tank - roomier LOL. There were no obvious leaks, however the seepage was real. The tank is only three years old. I did not have any bracing on it. Would that make a difference?? Approximately 3.5 foot long and 1.5 feet high and wide.
Caryl
Possibly would make a difference. What thickness glass?

I've seen 36 x 15 x 15 inch tanks, unbraced, made from 6mm glass with very visible bows when viewed along the top front edge, from the side. I'd recommend bracing on anything that long that was deeper than 12 inches (assuming 6mm glass, you'd be safe with 10mm up to probably 20 inches or more in my experience. With thinner glass, I'd be very nervous.). This may or may not have affected your leak. There would probably be some pretty strong forces on the silicone near the top of the tank which may've caused a slow leak when the tank was filled further than normal. Andrew.
