raeh1
What do you guys think is best to top up water in a tank Rain water. Tap water. Or is it the carbon I used Hamilton tap water two days ago and put carbon into the filter the anemone packed a wobbly, and closed up all day yesterday and today. I went to raglan for NSW water and took out the carbon and now 4 hours later and 40% water change he is open and happy again. Is it carbon or water. Maybe it was one or the other that caused the downfall of my first anemone? Especially when I couldn't tell the difference between happy and sad. I have heard that anemones are the first indicators of low water quality.
Drifty
I would have thought the water was the problem. I teseted the chlorine in auckland water 3 months ago at 0.6ppm, I run a swimming pool at between 0.8 and 1.5ppm not much difference in my opinion. You should get something to purify the water before it goes in your tank, either a reverse osmosis unit or a deionizer
Brianemone
the hamilton tap water is fairly good as thats all ive ever used. i will get an ro/di unit oneday but as of today the tap water here is going well. and i have also used the same brand of carbon that rueben is using and my anemone didnt mind at all. petplanet
You would have to poor in a lot of fresh water to upset things. What quantity did you put in? Reef did a major freshwater to up (unintended) with minimal/no ill effect. I would suspect the carbon. If any carbon powder landed on the anemone it would close up as the powder iritates corals. Did you put filter wool between the carbon and water return?
raeh1
I washed the carbon for about 5 minutes when added. I then added about 5 litres of top up water as salt was very high about 2.7% of the total tank volume. I will only do one change next time as this will identify the problem. I guess that if both were not quiet to the anemones liking then it double the impact on its health. Its happy now and I have set up a rain water catching system. Thanks to our neighbours dodgy spouting. Cheers
chimera
I suggest you all read this in full to see the importance of RO/DI units. Article by Randy Holmes-Farley written May this year, very interesting read. I bought a TDS unit not too long ago, going to hook it up this weekend and see how well my RODI unit functions. If anyone else wants to test their local water - Brian for example, bring a sample up next time you're in Auckland and we'll pump it through the TDS unit! http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2005-05/rhf/index.htm

SteveA
I suggest you all read this in full to see the importance of RO/DI units. Thanks, needed that to remind me to get my AintoG and replace my filter cartridges (5 micron, carbon & DI) before I either start producing more poluted water than went in or bugger my RO membrane. chimera
cheap! http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewItem.asp?idproduct=RO1312 this is the one i have, yet to test though, will let you know how it goes. it shows both tap water in and permeate (high quality water) out in ppm. according to that reference site, permeate from ro should be at least 10 times better than water going in (eg: 220ppm water in should be 22ppm permeate) also says final water from DI should be 0ppm (although 1 or 2ppm is not crucial) going by the 'taste test' auckland water is crap gotta love that metallic taste...
