cat Posted November 19, 2002 Report Share Posted November 19, 2002 I am currently trying to raise about 50 angel babies. They are doing ok so far on micro worms and brine shrimp. My problem is how much brine shrimp should they get? I am hatching my brine shrimp in 2 litre milk bottles, using 1/4 teaspoon of eggs per bottle. I have been getting a good hatch rate but not sure how long they last for. I cant feed them all at once so what happens to the rest. Do I just keep putting them back with the airstone and keep using them for a day or two or should they all be used in a day??? The old "as much they eat in 5 minutes" is very difficult to monitor with tiny angels and even tinier food!! :lol: I havent had any large losses (few real tiny ones passed on) but I want to make sure I raise as many of these angels as possible as the parents are beautiful. Thought I would put some in my community tank. All fish raced up to the tank waiting for dinner only to find they couldnt see dinner!!! Was quite funny. If a fish could ever look confused it was then. They knew something was there but where!!! The angels finally decided it wasnt worth using all that energy to eat such small stuff so just waited at the front of the tank for the 'real' food. Pegasus Posted November 19, 2002 Report Share Posted November 19, 2002 Hi Cat, I have quite a lot of Angel fry on the go just now, and I hatch a fresh lot of Brine Shrimp every three days. My present hatchers are just like yours, just 2ltr bottles as my needs at the moment are not big enough to warrant setting up the larger one I designed that grows the shrimp on. I sieve the shrimp through a mesh that allows the smallest ones to enter a container where they are sieved again for the new fry that have reached the free swimming stage. The ones in the first sieve are fed to the older fry, and the "consume in five minutes" rule has no bearing here, as the shrimp will stay alive in the fresh water for quite some time, and are hardly likely to polute the water, especially if you have a Cory to clean the shrimp up. Mine are all in bare bottom tanks, and a bath, as I am monitoring growth rates. I watch their pink bellies, and if they ain't bulging, then they get more shrimp Better to give three or four small feeds per day than two huge ones. The shrimp can "go off" in your hatcher after a while, and if you keep them over three days you may have to change the water and feed them to keep them alive. Natural Sea Water is good if you can get it. If you aren't growing them on (the shrimp) then a few drops of liquid fry food will keep them from starving, and the air should be on all the time or they will suffocate. Mine is also a bare tank except for some floating plants and air stone going softly. Dont think the b/nose is very happy but he/she is getting a small piece of cucumber as well to supplement the left overs on the bottom. Is this the best species to put in a tank with the fry? I wanted something to help stop the micro worms making the tank messy etc. I know they are not rubbish collectors but I am sure it will clean up any waste food. My feelings on using other than freshly hatched BBS have been posted elsewhere. I suggest you hatch less if you're not using the quantity currently. As the fish grow they'll eat more. I am sure the bristlenose would rather be back in the heavily planted tank. It must feel very 'naked and vunerable' in with the fry. (Not that the fry would do anything ). Trouble is, all the others will be jealous when you put him/her back with a big fat belly As Andrew says, in your situation small hatchings would be the answer until they put some size on. I too have a fair few snails of unknown origin in with all my fry. Wanted some Mystery Snails and some LFWCMM's, but nobody seems to have any How big are your fry, and how old are they now ? The parents are two of the most beautiful koi marbles I have seen in ages. Hoping a fair amount of the babies will be koi marked as well. If not I dont really care as all angels are beautiful. Also have approx 50 Kribensis free swimming today. They are in the 4 foot community tank and being looked after really well by mum and dad. All be it the others in the tank arent allowed within 2 inches of the bottom!! :lol: In the process of setting a tank up for them so we can slowly catch them and put them into their own tank to grow up. My interest was mainly for a friend who lives on a lifestyle block with no power or internet connection, but he breeds some wonderful WCMM's and Paradise Fish, but I too wouldn't mind beeding some of the LF variety. Saw a bare block of land we wanted, sold everything we had to get it... lived without power or phone for around three years.. now have everything we want, plus two houses and a bach. My other mate is a registered electrician, but refuses to get mains power and has been like that for over ten years, but he uses solar power and wind generators for his elecrical goods, plus he's on the net. cat Posted November 28, 2002 Author Report Share Posted November 28, 2002 Angel babies are going strong. Three weeks old and looking great. Amazing how much they change appearance!! Gone from looking like nothing to now having little fins top and bottom, and the patterning is starting to show already. The Kribs on the other hand havent done so well. Down to about 20 at the most. All the others in the tanks have had a feed on them I think. The Kribs are such great parents too. Seems a shame to lose them this way. I will put the breeding pair into a tank of their own next time. I have no way in "//??!! of getting the babies out as they are just so small and disappear under the logs or into the greenery. Just another excuse to set up another tank. :lol: :lol: I havent seen many Kribs for sale. The LFS had some babies in there not too long ago and seemed to get rid of them fairly quickly. I dont mind keeping them anyway.
