guppylover2
hi there just wondering people's thoughts on filtration for 7 foot tank (1300L0 with at least 3 big catfish (eventually) - currrently 2 gibbies and a plec, plus 2 joselimaianus and a gold nugget and a peppermint plec. considering 2 eheim professional 2s, capacity up to 600L each. or there is a giant eheim, does 1500L, only about $800, but HUGE monster, unlikely to fit in cabinets and could be noisy. the 2 eheim professionals are $700 each from animates. lots of money i know but i'll need good filtration with messy cats. livebearer_breeder
Id get 2 external canisters and add a big UG filter with some powerful air pumps. and two internal filters sitting on the inside beside the outlet of the UG filter. Lucid
Don't bother with an undegravel for a tank that size, I would stick with the 2 cannister filters and maybe add an airstone to the tank as an interest point rather than having two dirty great upstands sticking out the gravel. I find getting an airstone and burying it in the substrate and then sticking a peice of driftwood over it, makes an awesome interest peice for any tank. livebearer_breeder
UG filters can be quiet effective on big tanks, and there not overly expensive. Shae
Lucid
I agree there shae, but I am not a big fan of the upstands sticking up and having to cover it with plants B
David R
For a tank that size I wouldnt go for anything short of an overflow and sump/trickle filter set-up, especially with big messy catfish. Filtration can be incresaed/improved by adding more media and/or incresaed waterflow, all the heaters are out of the tank [no ugly power cords!] there's plenty of airation, and theyre so much easier to clean than canisters. There is no way in hell I'd spend $1400 on two big canisters when a sump set-up would do the same [if not better] job, cost half the amount and be way easier to clean. Travis & Vicki
our 6ft-3ft-3ft has an internal canister filter, and 2 aquaone cf1200, an well as a couple of air stones, hidden under drift wood, they are just keeping up with the cichlids, but i am concidering other options
caserole
I agree with David R on the best filtation system for a tank that size with large fish. How ever if you do go down the canister filter road consider this - how will you keep the gravel clean? One way you may consider is a reverse under gravel, that is the return ( in full or part ) from your canister filter pushes water down the "up lifts" and through the gravel . the canister filter collects the muck and the gravel is the bio filter. This kind of filtation works well in tanks were plants are not an important feature.
David R
how do you get a sump system as you've suggested? can you exlain? thanks for all the replies. The easiest way is to have a hole drilled in the back of the tank, then the water flows out and down a pipe to the trickle filter set up underneath the tank. Probably the best bet is to go into a big fish shop and ask them to show you. As for the hole in the tank, if it doesnt already have one you should be able to find someone who can do it for you, otherwise there are some funny overflow box things you could look into, I dont know much about them as they seem like a complicated way of doing an easy job and there's a lot more that can go wrong with one... guppylover2
animates in wellington don't seem to have any sump systems, bu maybe i'll ask them. the tank is still being built so maybe i'll get a hole drilled. read somewhere that best to have the hole in the top of your tank so that the overflow works from there, reduces risk of flooding in event of power failure. what do you reckon? do you know anyone who could set it up for me if i paid them? am not too good at DIY, and with my career limited time. Snowman
Check that the big Eheim comes with media, i saw a huge one at Hollywood that did up to 1200 ltrs but it was a professional 3, that was $853 but the media kit for it was an extra $297. I liked the idea of two inlets though, especially in a tank that size.
guppylover2
where and what is hollywood?
Snowman
Hollywood Fishfarm in Mt Roskill, wasn't sure if you are in Auckland as you don't have a location listed. Awesome range of fish and accessories and about the cheapest in Auckland for most things. I just see from one of your post that you are in Wellington so may be a bit far to go for a filter, worth a call to see if they are cheaper. Wouldn't cost a lot to courier to Wellington.
