ajbroome
Folks, Shouldn't skite but I'm happy to say that as of the other day, my pair of the above (the last in NZ) have turned into 30+ newly hatched babies - now I've just got to raise them up and get them out to other breeders... http://www.djramsey.com/tropfish/gold11.JPG Not that I'm a fan of albino fish but these have some historical significance to me. Now, onto the next species. Andrew.

Pegasus
Looks a beautiful fish AJ and I hope you have success with your efforts at rearing the young. Just wondering if all the young will be true albino. What are the chances ? Regards, Bill (Pegasus)
Wayne
Although the name sounds totally new, but awe!!! that's an awesome looking thing! congrats bro
Pegasus
They ain't called "Killies" for nothing So how about a bit of history Andrew... How did they get the name "Killies" ? They always remind me of a Freshwater Jack Pike and in the cases that I have been involved in they ate just like one with lightening speed and a quick gulp
Goldie
Congratulations. Nice one. good luck with the rearing

There are a couple of theories but the most popular one is that it's from the Dutch-American word for a small stream or ditch (Kil). Have a look at: http://www.killi.net/nwslarts/nlar381.html Andrew. Caryl
My theory is because when people first tried to keep them they got the conditions wrong and killied them.

ajbroome
Folks, I've got a batch of eggs (probably 20+) of these critters ready to hatch *right now*. If someone wants them, I'm happy to stick them in the mail. All you'd need to do is add water and you'd have baby fish within hours. These are not common fish (although easy enough to raise and breed) so I'd like them to go to someone who wants to have a serious go at keeping (and breeding) them. Ideally, you'd be hatching bringshrimp already and have some experience with raising fry... I'll have the non-albino version available soon too hopefully. They look a bit like these... http://www.petfish.net/misaje.htm http://home8.swipnet.se/~w-86183/akamkpa.htm Also, for people who want to collect them from me, I have Aphyosemion scheeli http://images.killi.net/s/SCE/00-0-Copr ... _44483.jpg and Epiplatys dageti http://www.geocities.com/dusan_kojic/dageti.jpg Please get back to me ASAP, especially with regard to the albino Fp. gardneri eggs. Andrew.
Interfecus
Yes please! I would really like some. How much would you charge? I'll send you my address via email if I believe the price to be acceptable.

ajbroome
Interfecus said... > The eggs of the albinos. Sorry, I thought you'd only been keeping fish a couple of months. You have: a) a spare tank, filters etc? b) brineshrimp hatching? c) experience raising good quality fry? and plan on breeding these in the long term with all that entails? These are *not* guppies that can be replaced at the local shop, you'd only be the 2nd person in NZ to have them currently (I'm the other one) and there is next to no chance of them being imported again (the species has been in NZ for 12 years with no new imports). If something was to happen to mine, I'd want to be fairly sure I could get some back from you in the future... Andrew.
Interfecus
I have all except for practical experience rearing valuable fry. Let me tell you though that before attempting to breed siamese fighters I researched the subject for around 10 - 15 hours over a week. I have brine shrimp and am trying to get a microworm culture right now. Please tell me if you believe these to be wasted on a beginner in fish breeding. I am always willing to learn and, it being the school holidays, I have plenty of time on hand to attend to my fish. I feed all of my fish on live foods, clean the tanks weekly, and I would certainly breed any fish that I raised.
ajbroome
Interfecus said... > Please tell me if you believe these to be wasted on a > beginner in fish breeding. No, not wasted. It's just that, as I said, these are very rare in NZ and I was hoping to send them to someone with a little more experience. Someone in Chch who is a member of the NZKA has agreed to take them. I think it's more practical, for the good of the fish, that he get them. However, mine are always breeding and I'd be happy to start saving some eggs for you, probably ready after Xmas. Or alternatively, if you ever come to Palmerston North (we have the best fish shop in this part of the country) then I'd be happy to give you some young fish to have a go with. Another option is that I want to go to Wellington at some stage soon (got to bother a bunch of people, fishy and otherwise) so maybe I could drop some off? Or, you could contact Stuart Lord in Silverstream, I'm sure he'd be happy to sell you a couple of good easy fish to start off with. He doesn't have e-mail but you can look him up in the phone book and tell him I sent you. Sorry that I couldn't help you out right now, but if you're still keen to have a go with killies then I'm sure we can get you some fish or eggs pretty easily over the next few weeks. Thanks, Andrew. Interfecus
I'm glad you have another buyer. I have the equipment to take on more fish but I have to learn more discipline and breed 1 or 2 species well, not just buying tons of species. If I bought every fish I liked then I'd be in even more trouble with my bank balance than I am now . I've spent nearly all of my savings just in the past 1 1/2 months since I started this and have had stuff bought for me by my mum. I've probably spent over $500 already! In about 6 months or so I might well start breeding killies though.
Pegasus
Hi Andrew, Congrats on your new position as Moderator Good advice to Interfecus by the way. If these are indeed as rare as you say, then every endevour should be made to preserve the species, and even though I myself have bred Killies in the past, I would not like to be placed in a position where I could be responsible for the extinction of a species. Do as Andrew says Interfecus.... Start with a species that is not in danger.... take all the advice you can from other KIllie keepers, and by this time perhaps the species in question will be more available. Keep up the good work Andrew.... We know you will Regards, Bill (Pegasus)
