Kaine
So im setting up tank number 5 and like it sez in subject i want to mix 8 bumble bee cichlids,8 Electric yellows, and 8 demisoni. I would get all 24 as juvanils around the same size and would be putting them into a 215L tank that will have alote of rockwork hiding places... Please share your thoughts about this please! I would be putting all 24 at the same time
Bananalobster
I just have the one tank personally but I see a couple of problems... First off "bumble bee" cichlids (pseudotropheus crabro) get to 8 inches and have a reputation for being very aggressive. I don't think it would be a good idea to have any in a 215 liter tank. (What are the dimensions by the way?). Also 8 demasoni is a little on the low side, they recommend to start with no less than 12 but the more the better as they are hard on each other but seem to ignore other species for the most part. If your tank is 4 foot long you could go with 8 electric yellows and 12 - 18 or so demasoni quite happily I would say. Just remember with all this overstocking going on you should go big with the filter and waterchanges
Kaine
I do water change 2 to 3 times a week and my filter is pumping around 4000litres per hour. I did a bit of research on it and got told the same with the demis... 10 to 12 to start with but as the bumble bees are in the same family group as the demis and are very aggressive as well i thought this might solve this problem? Normaly I found that if you flood the tank with very aggressive fish it tends to lower aggression. If you think different plz say
camtang
Personally I would start with more than 8 dems, and a couple less BB.
Bananalobster
Is your tank 4ft long? Up to you at the end of the day, yeah they might be similar enough to spread aggression but the bumble bees will end up twice the size of the dems eventually lol! I don't think I would be brave enough but I'm sure people have done it..
Kaine
sory yeah it is 4ft long and spoke to a breeder and he sez i still need to go high numbers with the demis still as the 2 dont really interact even tho there from the same family.. bumble bees being twice the size of a demi isnt a prob 2 me as every demi ive had with defend against fish 3 times the size.. I will take a look at how meany bees i put in there tho
nudge
Personally I would start with more than 8 dems, and a couple less BB. I'm with camtang on this one, I'd start with 15 to 20 dems and less of the BB pref single male with multiple females.
ryanjury
Stick with more dems and the yellows.. Maybe add some bumblebees but be prepared to thin the numbers out as they get bigger, I have had some monster bumblebees and a 4ft tank isn't really big enough for them but they do take a number of years to get huge.. Kaine
Thanks very good advice After Listning to all your comments I will be putting a order in of 16 demisoni,10 Electric Yellow, and 6 bumble bees... 32 fish does seem a for such a small tank but I will have I higher survival rate having it heavy stocked and my filtration turns the water over just under 20X per hour.. Also with the type of fish im keeping I will have loses so that number will drop. I do have a bigger tank that they could go in later down the line but Im hoping to use it for a tanganikan tank
Likoma
How does you biological degradation cope with such a high cycle rate? Is it seachem matrix or a similar product?
Kaine
Yeah its a similar to seachem matrix and goes throw a very fine foam that is shaped like a egg carton as they provide more surface area then flat foam filters.Im always up for suggestions tho if you have any tips. Im always looking for better ways to improve my filtration. Bigger tank has sump witch works very well
