PENEJANE
what is good algae and what isn't. I have noticed when I look through my tank with the light from the other side there is this clearish furry looking stuff on the plants. I haven't seen it on the ornaments yet. My guppies are often picking stuff off the plants but now what ever it is has growen heaps. I did a water change on friday just gone and will do another one this comming friday. Fish seem to be fine and all and still having babies. Is there any algae eater that would eat this stuff and is suitable with guppies?? Plantman
All planted tank have algae, it is a matter of controling it. constant water changes keep the algae low and managable. i use to have a wood with algae and it look nice and dreammy when it is fully cover with algae. after a while i begin to struggle with lots of algae with my other plants. so i have to take out the dreammy algae and give it a good clean. from one algae to another "you are a pest!!!" Snowman
Does it look like a fur, or maybe hair?
Lucid
do you have many snails in the tank, if it looks clearish, I would be more inclined to say snails eggs. Can you see little white dots in the clear stuff on the leaves, I have heaps and can't seem to get rid of em, but no algae either B
PENEJANE
I was having a real good look at it last night and it looks like little trees (best way I can discribe it). It has like a little bushy top and sits just above the leaf its on and moves with the current in the water. I have noticed I have got a couple of snails but I never purchased them so they must of come on the plants but they are very very tiny and can't see how they would of laied that many eggs lol. I just had a look this morning and a bit of it seems to of been eaten last night from the guppies. When I do my water change this friday I will give the plants a bit of a wipe over with my fingers to see if I can get the stuff off and see how quickly it comes back. It is also on the inside of the glass and moves about with the current. I have a magnetic glass cleaner which takes the stuff off but it seems to appear again with in 2-4 days. Really hope this won't harm my fish or fry.
Shelley
I don't recognise the clear algae type stuff you are describing and have not liked to use algae rid or similar in the tank after having lost some fish in the past after using it. My algae problem is much better now and when I do water changes...if i notice it growing back bad i will take out the plants and ornaments...and soak them in a bucket with algae rid while i clean up the tank....then rinse them well scrub the ornaments wipe off the leaves....and reposition in the tank...it occurs to me that maybe there are some beneficial bacterias that i am cleaning off but i figure that the stones should be holding enough of that. Sometimes the glass walls get quite thick with green, as we live in a very sunny house. Again when doing water changes...if this is bad i will wipe the walls down. We scored a pleco with one of the tanks we bought...and he is doing a wonderful job cleaning up...could probably do with another one at least for this tank and one for each of the other smaller tanks. He is so much fun to watch sucking on the plant leaves...polishing them up :-) Hope you can sort out what it is you have.
PENEJANE
so the sucker fish will even clean the plants?? Hmmm wonder if he will clean my house for me to! hahahaha Seems as I am only looking at getting one of them for now. Would I be better off geting a female or just a male for now? I ain't interested in breeding them at all. Just wanting the one to help maintain the tank.
HummingBird
I have this stuff in one of my tanks too. It's pretty annoying.

PENEJANE
hehehehe yah thats good to know shelly. I went down to the shop today but didn't like what they had. There were a lot of dead fish floating about in his tanks and they were all green and could bearly see the fish inside. But information wise he told me that my tank is to new (2 weeks) to worry about a algae eater yet and to first of all get more plants in my tank. So I am going to get more plants first over the next month and once I have a nicely set up tank I will then reconsider getting the algae eater
