gamefreek101 Posted June 30, 2014 Report Share Posted June 30, 2014 Painting my background good idea or not if so what sort of paint acrylic or oil based ? i was told painting glass is not a good idea as chemicals from paint eventually seaps threw ? is this true or not ? what about a product called plasti dip witch can be removed with no damage if this is an option i sell it at work but rep cant tell me if it will hurt anything. any help would be greatly appreciated .im building a marine tank if this makes any difference 450ltr. Adrienne Posted June 30, 2014 Report Share Posted June 30, 2014 Rubbish to glass letting paint chemicals or anything through it (unless there is a crack). Acrylic paint works well and is easy to remove if you decide you don't want it any longer. It took me about 5 coats using a roller to get a good even coverage on my tank. Totara Posted June 30, 2014 Report Share Posted June 30, 2014 On my first tank, I taped a store bought background on, on my second tank I spray painted it black. The store bought one looked awful as water leeched down between it and the glass (I could've used the glue though). The black has stood up well. viewtopic.php?f=4&t=61015 My new tank I opted not to go black back and have gone backing instead. Mainly because I wasn't sure what I was doing with the setup. redracer77 Posted June 30, 2014 Report Share Posted June 30, 2014 If you are looking at painting it dark blue be aware of the tints in the paint, some blues made with violet look very different on the tank with lights on. Glass is one of the least permeable materials around, NOTHING is going to seep through it. You may get a little bit of solvent and overspray getting inside the tank, some extremely tiny amount not worth worrying about. And the solvent will all evaporate and be gone anyway. I love a nice black background, provides contrast to things in your tank and hides pipes/cords etc. Other options are vinyl wrap or something like corflute held on with adhesive.
