discusnoob
notice there are a few really really nice densely planted big tanks, would love to get to that point, however is it a case of you need to be real mindful of what fish you have as fish (ie plecos etc) are poo machines! thinking about how you gravel vac a tank like that otherwise? discusnoob
Is that because the plants will eat the nitrates, that in combination with the filter system should be enough to keep the water clean for the fish (along with regular water changes)

stillnzcookie
I only gravel vac the places where there is bare substrate, as I figure that fish poo = plant food elsewhere! I have found that the more plants I have, the easier it has been to keep my tank parameters stable. I only have a little tank though, but I presume a bigger tank would be similar. discusnoob
ive started planting a few plants which are flourishing in the tank, the great thing about most plants is once you get one established you can easily take clippings and create more one thing i do know though is this fish game is very involved, you got to keep up with the play, i inherited one fish which has spawned a whole new hobbie
Morcs
Use a small vac and just use a circular motion just above the surface - thatll loosen and suck up any debris. Works especially well for silica sand.
