DennisP
I'll get around to it soon. When I remember. Post a reminder on Sunday if I haven't done it by then. On a side note, my male apisto has a swollen eye. Big issue?
Fruju
I'll get around to it soon. When I remember. Post a reminder on Sunday if I haven't done it by then. On a side note, my male apisto has a swollen eye. Big issue? My female now has a swollen eye too, trying to fix it.
DennisP
How? I'm fairly sure it has just happened.
danval
That's no good Dennis/Fruju. I had my breeding Super Red cockatoo die from a similar affliction a few months ago. Maybe the start of pop eye? Get on to it quick as I left mine too long.
danval
Sounds like it can be caused by an injury if just in one eye. I just googled this.. http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/disease/popeye.php
DennisP
That's what I'm leaning towards. I'll buy some salt tomorrow and hope it goes away.
danval
Good luck
DennisP
This might give you an idea of what it looks like. Not the best photo, but still.
danval
Looks good Dennis. Female Apisto will not be able to defend in such a small space.
DennisP
Shes pretty mellow, but not letting anyone into the pile of sticks.
danval
Exciting! Watch out for the tetras... the fry will slowly disappear. (first hand experience)
DennisP
I'm not holding out on any fry surviving. If I'm lucky and the female doesn't eat them, they could hide and feed in the leaf litter. I just like how they behave so naturally in the tank.
DennisP
As of this morning, the female has become increasingly aggressive so I have separated the male with a make shift in tank juice bottle divider. He hasn't been seriously injured, just a bit of torn caudal fin. She's still trying her hardest to get at him though.
camtang
Nice tank Dennis
Fruju
What size is your tank DennisP?
DennisP
60l So it is right on the edge of being too small for a breeding pair
Fruju
Yeah; I'd certainly they utilise all of my 180L tank.
danval
Hey Dennis. To be on the safe side I always remove my Males to another tank. Even though the females are small they are that aggressive that they can kill a male, although this is not a problem in a large tank with plenty of hiding places. I had a Female Macmasteri that was like that....
DennisP
I would do that too. I could throw him in the 7l tank. But it is uncycled. I'll leave him in the 3 litre bottle sitting in the tank for now. It has hooked in it for current and oxygenation. How long is her aggression likely to last?
danval
Aggression will last as long as she is protecting eggs or fry.. Seems to get worse just prior to fry becoming free swimming..
DennisP
Hmmmmmmm...... I could keep him in the 7l. I'm just worried about him jumping. Otherwise I could add some plants and sticks to the bottle so he feels more comfortable.
Fruju
Well, sorted out the tank stock. And now hopefully I can get some successful breeding activity. Tank = 180L, 1200L x 45H x 30D. Ammonia = 0, Nitrite = 0, Nitrate = ? Haven't got a test kit. PH = <6 5 Apistogramma Agassizii double red, 2 m/3f (One male needs to get bigger, other male is much more mature, 2 females look like they are in breeding mode). 2 GBA 1 Royal whiptail catfish, but gonna get maybe a couple more (I like them). 4 red eye tetras (moving out asap), gonna replace them with a few rocket pencilfish which are apparently fry safe. Might get some ottos too. Planning on turning this into a riparium tank. BTW: How sensitive are apistos to O2 in the water?
Godly3vil
Mine seem to love having bugger all surface movement so not too much oxygen in the water. They prefer the filter not being too powerful in my experience. Small and constant water changes seems to keep them happy and healthy. I would definitely get rid of the red eye tetras, another cheaper fish that is supposed to be a good dither fish and fry safe are black neons. That's what I'm using. Fruju
Heard the opposite about black neons actually haha.
Godly3vil
Mine stay completely away from my apistos, never seen them go past the middle level of the tank.
