Asmodeus
I have to move house this weekend and , typically, I have just set up a 200l planted aquarium  Luckily I haven't added fish yet, but the tank has just completed its cycle. I'm going to have to do a total tear down but I want to keep as much water as possible. I know the cheap plastic bins and containers you can buy are not always suitable for transporting large amounts of liquid but you can buy cheap water drums on trademe. The ones Im looking at are food grade but have had hog casings in them (brine) so will need a soak and wash. do you think they would be OK after that? What would you wash with? Just water? Would you line it with a big trash sack or something perhaps? http://www.trademe.co.nz/business-farmi ... 284481.htm http://www.trademe.co.nz/business-farmi ... 234124.htm Alternatively is there anything else suitable and cheap around? I dont actually need 200l drum, 100 would do it as that would hold half my tank Cheers!
SamH
Moving 100L of water in one go won't be easy, if I had to do it I'd split it into several 10-20L buckets with lids. The water itself holds very little bacteria, so long as you keep all the substrate and bio media alive you should be fine.
Asmodeus
OK cool, what would be the minimum amount of water you would keep? 30%? 20%?
blueether
if it was me, none
David R
The only reason I take water when moving tanks is to avoid acclimatising fish. Catch fish, save ~40% water, move tank, add 40% old water, chuck fish straight in, fill up to full volume keeping an eye on temp. If you don't have fish I wouldn't work about it too much, although I don't know how sensitive plants would be to a 100% water change with cold water, you might need to pre-heat it or add some boiling water [carefully] as it fills to avoid shocking them? the-obstacle
Plants will be fine with a 100% water change. I'd say just keep the filter wet (full of water) and the substrate wet in buckets and then refill with the hose when you get to the new place. Thr33Swords
When I moved house recently, I moved all the water in my 140 litre tank using buckets and various other containers in the back of a van and just drove REALLY carefully. Actually went pretty well, think I lost about 20 litres at the most
