fish guy
Hi i just setup a nano the other day and was wondering how do you make a moss carpet. I was planing on using java moss. Would love to know what you think
Li@m
Xmas moss would work better and look nicer. Tie the moss onto pieces of mesh, slate or little rocks. Fine stainless steel or aluminium mesh would work great! Use cotton thread to tie the moss down and don't forget to spread it out.
SamH
I've got an accidental moss carpet in my iwagumi tank, the moss has taken over the hairgrass All you need to do is layer the moss as thinly as possible (try not to overlap any moss) and tie it to a rock, slate or tile with cotton wool. It should take around 3mths to fill in if you do it right
blueether
are there any Fissidens spp. commercially available in NZ? I would think that it would make a fantastic carpet.
fish guy
Ive rapped my java moss around 10mm stones and did that about 30 times for the foreground. How long will it take for it to become a decent carpet and is their any way of speeding this up? Thanks
SamH
It should take around 3mths to fill in if you do it right It pays to read your replies thoroughly. In terms of speeding it up, CO2 will help it along but it's not too demanding.

SamH
In future, just hit the text next to IMG in the "Links to share this photo" box. It should automatically copy the text and you can paste it here for us to see. Is the tank cloudy from setup or is that an algae bloom? fish guy
just cloudy only set it up yesterday. I was thinking of stocking with a couple of white cloud mountain minnows and some fresh water shrimp. any other suggestions?
SamH
Fishwise I'd be tempted to go for something like guppies if your house isn't too cold. WCMM prefer larger groups and a bit more space. In terms of the tank, I'd be going for a finer substrate next time.
fish guy
I kind of ran out of suitable gravel so i had to improvises a wee bit
fish guy
Doesnt keeping guppys jn cold water shorten their life span
SamH
If anything it'll lengthen it, warm water speeds up life so would make their life shorter. Do you have a thermometer measuring the ambient temperature of the room?
fish guy
Not at the mo. So how often should i trim my moss
SamH
Just whenever it gets too long, the shorter you keep it the healthier it'll be.
