TenyTinyKaz
This photo is a bit old the fry are a lot bigger now but many of them are still displaying the patchy brown that you can see on them, some of them however aren't. Is this just their immature colours that will fade away or will the brown patches always be there?
Caryl
I always thought it was a sign of poor breeding :dunno:
si_sphinx
Electric yellows are getting bad now. get some yellows from a good breeder and keep them stress free with good water and quality food and you will have some nicer looking fish. Waste of time breeding bad ones like this.
disgustipated
i bought a bunch of elec yellow fry of some guy a few years back, he only wanted $10 for 50 of them, i bought them as feeders, when i asked him why they were so cheap, he said because the colour will be bad because the parents had bad colour too. i put them in with my oscars and most were eaten pretty quickly but the ones that did survive a few months got much bigger and never even looked remotely close to the beautiful full yellow ones i've seen in shops. they were more browny yellow. all i'm saying is nah, if the colour is bad now it's not gonna get much better imo. dunno if that helps. TenyTinyKaz
Thanks guys, I was concerned about that, when I bought the mother from a African community tank she came already holding god only knew what and this lot popped out (my first mouth brooders so quite happy about it). Since then the mother and my male have produced about 30 odd fry who all look much better to my very untrained eye.

ryanjury
What everyone else has said above, unfortunately they are just poorly bred/hybrid fish very common with electric yellows in NZ these days.
herefishiefishie
Try & find someone who has line bred them for quality & or specific features. Just because the lineage is old, doesn't mean there won't be nice ones out there(hopefully lol) Plenty of not so nice ones here in Aussie too. But plenty of pretty ones Frenchy
