Bio balls or scoria

if you get scoria, get smaller pieces... more surface area, bio balls are more effective when it is a wet dry filter... if its submerged they are not as effective.

i would actually get 'sintered glass noodles' on Trademe, very good, cheap and value for money....

Scoria can contain heavy metals, so needs to be washed and washed and ....... (you may still have a problem).

Once you have done this it will still release very fine sand size scoria that is very sharp ( it's a hazard to water pumps and glass ).

Scoria also works best in a wet dry configuration, the air around the media allows the bacteria to proliferate to a greater level.

It also appears to brake down (due to water erosion maybe) over time, producing even more fine sand size pieces.

If you can afford the 'sintered glass noodles' it would be a better option, so would a wet dry configuration (for out right biological filtrating power).

I just purchased 15kg of them dont know if it will be too much or not.

i was going to get 10kg but though another 5 would't hurt.

Thanks once again for the help guys

depends on turn over and stock and water volume, tank size.

the more the merrier when it comes to bio media but with in reason.

i prefer to over stock on bio media to be over capacity than under.
