Stella
Ah right  I gave up before then as I couldn't see much, just re-watched. I do like your combination of sand, stones, wood and leaves. It looks really nice! Love the fat little inanga posing at the end.

Stella
they have an amazing sense of smell! Do you see much of your torries when they are not being fed?
blueether
now that I have changed the tank around I see him (?) out a lot more, seems to do a stint most mornings till about 10am then comes back out from maybe 7pm. He spend most of the rest of the time in the rock you can see on the left on the video, has 4 tunnels in it that all join. Will see him out at other times during the day. I worry that he doesn't get enough food as the inanga and smelt are so fast, and little pigs. Was dropping food down the spare spray bar to the bottom but the other fish have learned to wait at the bottom of the pipe and push him out of they way  I'll have to go and get some live food once the rivers have dropped back down after all the rain we've had. Would love another one, are they very territorial? Was teasing one of the bullies this morning with a mirror (as you do...) and the torrie was out - went almost black and come right over to the mirror. Stella
Fascinating! Mine pretty much only came out at feeding time, but then they could be quite playful for a period before going back into hiding. It can be hard to get enough food into them. They take a while to learn how to take food from the water column and can be easily outcompeted by more aggressive feeders. I think they have stomach walls that don't easily 'bulge' when full (unlike your inanga!) and their huge pectoral and pelvic fins hide their little bulges rather well. Good trick using the spare spray bar, though annoying that the others learned so quick! What are you feeding them? I used to feed my bluegills separately, using a sieve to scare away the other fish. They actually learned very quickly that the sieve meant food and that me moving it was only to scare the other fish not them. They would come over to the front of the tank when they saw me approach with the sieve! Torries are not at all territorial, they do play little chasing games, but it really does look like fun rather than aggression. With the mirror.... do you mean the bully or the torrie went black??? blueether
He is eating fine, when food gets to him... They are all getting chicken heart atm (stolen from the cat). The smelt and inanga wouldn't come close to the spray bar for a few days, but they learned too quickly. I feel I might be over feeding the tank in general as I'm havng trouble keeping the water from clouding up. But on the up side the smelt and inanga are growing fast. If they keep it up I might end up over stocked :-? Have put some java moss in there to try to keep some nutrients down, and everyone keeps commenting on the lack of green stuff. I do have some native stuff to go in the tank but I'm waiting for another week or two until the salt is taken out a bit after the ich I've had. With the mirror.... do you mean the bully or the torrie went black???The torrie turned real dark.
Stella
The torrie turned real dark. Wow, how odd! I have not heard of that before. Torries definitely do change colour to blend in, but slowly over time. That sounds like a quick change like the bullies do when being aggressive. WEIRD. Can you get some photos or film of this? (I was treating a little torrie once in a red bucket, it was there for a few days. When I put it back in the tank it had turned this weird striped apricot colour trying to blend with the bucket! Looked ridiculous)
blueether
Couldn't get him to change with a mirror just then but these were taken over about 90 seconds when the light was turned on:

blueether
Nice fish and vids were the torrent fish hard to catch? I'll agree about the fish, but the video (camera) need some work I got the torrent fish on my first trip to the stream near my old's place, middle of the day getting some live food for the two bullies I then. Just turning over rocks in a fast-ish bit of the stream with the net down stream - easy really
