Tezza D
When I first caught my tadpoles, I managed to accidently catch a couple of water snails, and I'm guessing, a whole pile of eggs too... then I got them some oxy weed, and I noticed several lots of snail eggs on those! Now my tank has LOTS of baby water snails crawling about. I've been told it's not good with FISH to have too many water snails in the tank, so am wondering if it's the same with tadpoles, or whether they'll eat them? There are a few waterboatmen in there too, and I've noticed all the small ones that were in there, have now gone, and there aren't so many of the big ones either, so I'm guessing the taddies have been eating them. If I need to remove baby water snails... is there anyone wanting any snails??? LOL!
Stella
With snails in aquaria, it is more of an aesthetic thing than anything else. People seem to just not like the look of them everywhere (personally I love them, and they convert stuck-on algae to easily-removable pellets). Each to their own. With the waterboatmen.... the small ones could have grown up? The large ones may have flown away. It takes a very long time for them to die of old age. I doubt that the tadpoles ate them - they are very fast and probably crunchier than the tadpoles pathetic jaw muscles could cope with. Insect Direct
snails (population explosion anyway) are often the result of overfeeding. have seen tadpoles eat most of a huhu beetle Stella......was dead already though
Tezza D
snails (population explosion anyway) are often the result of overfeeding. have seen tadpoles eat most of a huhu beetle Stella......was dead already though  Overfeeding the tadpoles so they're not eating the snails?? Hmm, maybe I need to remove some of the weed then! lol! Never realised boatment could fly!! Always thought they just stayed in the water! There's still about 3 in there, but there were quite a few smaller ones at one stage and never noticed them get bigger.. they just disappeared, which is why I'd thought the taddies might've eaten them. I love watching the watersnails too.. so if they're not actually doing any harm in there, I'll leave them. The babies are such tiny teeny wee things! Insect Direct
over feeding the tadpoles so excess goes to snails etc. same happens in fish tanks. snails are all good, not sure tadpoles could eat them, maybe some of the small ones.
