Brianemone
howdy i have a four foot tank and i now have a filter for it and i would like to set it up as a nice planted tank. i have been thinking that discus would look good and have babies (maybe) that way i can reclaim the cost of everything ( ) anyone have some suggestions of what might be good in a 4x2x2?? other than discus, i am really getting into breeding and such so somethink that i could breed would be ideal
CatBrat
Lot's of Pleco's . There are quite a few species of them that you would be able to breed, given the proper conditions and care. They would need the same sort of attention as the discus would (sometimes less) and shouldn't be too hard too spawn depending on what you get. Cheers, CatBrat. Brianemone
has anyone here bred red spots??
CatBrat
Note: Nice planted setup! There are a lot of Pleco's which can live in planted tanks, without disturbing the plants! I don't think they have been bred in a tank, and if they have they would need a much larger tank. I think they breed the same way as normal common pleco's, which dig cave's into clay bank's and spawn in them (you can see that it would be quite hard to do this in a tank). I was thinking more along the line's of a group of nice Ancistrus sp. or Hypancistrus sp., which stay small (less than 15cm) and are very attractive. Cheers, CatBrat. Brianemone
Hypancistrus sp are nice, how much are they?? and are they readily available?
CatBrat
Yes they are nice. They aren't that common, but if you look around you will find them. The only Hypancistrus spp. I have seen in NZ, are Queen Arabesque Pleco's (L260), Chocolate Zebra Pleco's (L270), Snowball Pleco's (L102), what I think is L136c (it looks like the Snowball!) and rarely Zebra Pleco (L046). But you could probably order in diffrent species. They are usually around $180 each (about the same as Discus), but youcan sometimes get them for a bit less. Another species you might like are Clown Pleco's (Panaque maccus, L104), these still aren't that common, but only cost around $50 and are eaiser to breed than Hypancistrus spp.. Cheers, CatBrat. Luke*
Cardinals, nice and slow moving just how discus like it. They compliment discus colours really well not to mention the planted tank
Brianemone
yeah i have seen neons in a planted tank with discus and it did look very nice
Caryl
I too think cardinals look great with discus - neons tend to be too small. A school of rummy noses would also look great, even harlequins ot other tetras of that size.
