kuhli loach
Trying to choose a community of small tropicals for my roughly 60 by 30 by 30 tank. Need help on picking a species of shoaling fish out of hatchetfish, tiger barbs, cherry barbs, rummynosed, emperor, cardinal and neon tetra, golden pencilfish, zebra danio, harlequin rasbora and threadfin rainbowfish. need to know how many fish would be good in a school for a tank this size and which fish would be most compatible for a community aquarium. Fish names in red I would prefer to keep but any of the above fish would be good.

Zev
Tiger barbs can be nippy and aggressive if not kept in large enough numbers. Hatchet fish are surface dwellers, so you may need some mid water fish as well, which will cut your numbers down. Unfortunately Neons do not shoal, per se, unless you startle them, and more often than not they just hang around separately or one picks on all the others and they hide (this is usually a bossy female ) I do not know what Cardinals are like, P44 may be able to elaborate on that. Pencilfish seem to hang around together more, but swim at an odd angle. Threadfins are nice, swim fast and in the quantity P44 suggests would look good. Whatever you do, do not use Neons to cycle your tank, they are not particularly hardy in immature tanks.
MarkLB
IME the Cardinal Tetra schools tighter, lives longer, has more colour, and gets a little bigger than a Neon. They cost more but I reckon they're worth it.
kuhli loach
I dont think i will keep tiger barbs as although they look very attractive, viberent fish they sound like they will readily attack more pretty delicate fish especially those with flowing finnage. If neons don't shoal that does not bother me as they were not a favored fish i really wanted to keep anyway. How many hatchet fish and susequently mid water fish would i be able to keep, though as I quite wanted hatchets? Cardinals sound good as well and I think look far nicer than neons.
