The adults eat insects, while the larvae live in rotting wood or in soil. 5000 species worldwide, 20 in NZ (6 threatened species) (I HIGHLY recommend Andrew Crowe's Which New Zealand Insect) I would say the one on the right is the female, and in the later picture her eggs have grown more.
