Omaria
I put the four babies in a separate container inside the tank and the mother fish is also in a separate floating tank. How long do I keep the babies isolated, should I catch the others too or leave them (been there since yesterday) how often do I need to change their water. Just sucked it up with a sponge and replace it with the tankwater. How long do I keep the mother separated, she loooks a bit sad in the little tank all by herself
malevolentsparkle
basically anything that can fit the fry in it's mouth will be a threat, best to catch as many as you can and let the mother go. but if your tank is planted enough then at least some fry will survive even with other fish around. It's best to separate the fry in a net so water can circulate but if you have them in a solid container then several times a day you should change the water with tank water. Joshlikesfish
Thanks for your reply, very helpful. How long do I need to keep the fry seperate?Untill they are too big to fit in other fishes mouths. A net for fry, like Malevolentsparkle mentioned is only around $10 from a LFS
BikBok
In my tank which have nothing bigger than a dwarf gourami, after the first 7-10 days, any surviving fry usually stay that way. but 90 % of my fry are eaten in the first few days with the gourami and choc zebra about! I have two new female guppy in a quarantine tank at the moment.. one of the females was already pregnant and had fry yesterday .. they all still there as far as I can tell.. and because it's a QT .. there's barely anything else in the tank.. no gravel, a single tunnel and a small amount of floating Indian fern. somehow the fry managed to escape being eaten! It's always exciting when the first few batches of fry arrive but after a while when you get new fry every month you begin to not worry about saving them so much! I tend to let nature take it's course, it's good protein! (I have two guppy in the eel tank for that reason) But survivors are always interesting to watch grow up.. they usually turn out big and strong. Sometimes out of the blue I'll get a guppy coloration that I wasn't expecting .. like my sunset guppy
