oO SKIPPY Oo
hi all - i recently got some Sagittaria Microfolia (thanks to Adrienne) and it looked like it was doing ok but in the last week or so i've noticed that leaves appear to be dying off - i have cabomba, twisted val and one more plant that i forget the name of which appear to be growing slowly but nicely - all a nice lush green and from what i can see i dont have any algae on any of the plants. im running the lights about 10 hours a day - i dont have co2 running at the mo cause i broke my diffuser. im getting some flourish comprehensive in the next day or so - will that help ? ive got some flourish excel which i havent dosed in a while because of the twisted val - should i start dosing this in small amounts to save the val from melting? is there anything else i can do ? Cheers
Sophia
I too am afraid to use excel in my tank with twisted val but I think it is supposed to be OK in the standard dose on the bottle. Though it does say you should dose daily. :-? I presume you have the sagittaria with the sword shaped leaves, not the spoon shaped? The latter means it's not been grown under water so they do die off and then regrow as swords. My tank is mostly new plants of various kinds and some of them appear to not have enjoyed moving to their new surroundings that much and are doing a bit of die-back. I am presuming they will sort themselves out within a month and be happy again. And hoping this is the case
oO SKIPPY Oo
yeah i read daily dose but because of the val i havent been doing it that often - yep sword shaped leaves. ive had these swords for about a month so thought perhaps they should be ok now ? oO SKIPPY Oo
heres a couple of pics of what its starting to look like - calling the plant experts any ideas ?
phoenix44
wow. That is tiny! Give them a couple of fert balls. Twisted val is more resilient to excel than straight val species. Everything is fine with comprehensive.
oO SKIPPY Oo
I think that because the leaves are dying off they are getting smaller? I'm waiting for some JBL fert balls to come from redwoods in the next couple of days with the flourish comprehensive - how many fert balls should i put in under the roots how far apart should i put them so they are the most effective ? im getting 20 balls so I was going to put some under all the twisted val (if its worth while) and some under the other plants. Because i have a bad memory I cant remember what this plant is that I bought at the KMAC auction last month - can anyone help
phoenix44
Just spread the fert balls evenly but save 5 or so for a rainy day in-case you decide to add crypts or swords at a later date. That plant looks like Hygrophilia corymbosa stricta.
oO SKIPPY Oo
cool thanks P44 - so you reckon with the fert balls and dosing of excel, and comprehensive the sag will start growing again ? should i look at getting my DIY CO2 going again ? Adrienne
The microfolia came out of my discus tank so has always be under water. What temperature is your tank and what is your substrate. The only ferts I ever used with it were flourish excel and a little flourish comprehensive. I found it very very slow growing to start with but once springtime came it took off.
SamH
Is it just me or is there Cyano starting in that tank?

SamH
Green dot in the second one and the green patch toward the front of the third one. Then again, I could be imagining it.

Bilbo
Is it just me or is there Cyano starting in that tank? I was looking at that too. Maybe just a mark on the picture? Maybe its just getting its roots sorted out before it starts growing. I have found a few plants that look a bit sad for a while after being moved. Sophia
My sagittaria also looked like that from time to time, I just cut those leaves off when they were obviously dying. I didn't have JBL balls either. Also those leaves dying off didn't stop it spreading or getting longer so as Adrienne says it might just be getting itself started. Sophia
here is another thread with same plant but longer, these also have dying off bits. I think it's just natural. After all the leaves can't live forever viewtopic.php?f=4&t=47765
oO SKIPPY Oo
that will be good if they do come right - i put some JBL balls, flourish comprehensive, and flourish excel in tonight. hopefully they all start growing again and taking off now
