ryanjury
It depends on your police and the amount you are claiming etc.. Most insurance companies like to see proof of purchase etc but if you have a broken TV sitting there they cannot say you don't have one and not pay out Alot of insurance companies have different policies on paying out on older stuff too, some are replacement new for old (regardless of age) and some are market value after a certain age (I think 8yrs rings a bell). Also not sure about earthquake cover?

Not so much proof of what you paid for it but more proof that you actually owned it. Manuals if you kept them are sometimes considered enough for proof of purchase. Also if it is a brand new item purchased from the likes from Noel Leeming they can pull up records and print of recipts for you. And like Ryan said, if you still have the broken item that should be proof enough that you owned it. If you have house and contents insured with a company, the EQC should cover most personal property, apart from things such as motor vehicles or pieces of art. phoenix44
It will depend on your policy coverage. Some policies do an old for new cover irrespective of age, and some are at replacement value, some have an age specific old for new policy cover. Photos of the broken item are usually enough evidence to support a claim. PHOTOGRAPH EVERYTHING even if you think it is irrelevant. Take videos of the damage if you have to and make sure there is a time and date stamp on images that the camera captures.
phoenix44
INFO FOR EARTHQUAKE AFFECTED CHCH RESIDENTS Also, you'll likely need to make a claim with the Earthquake commission - https://cms.eqc.co.nz/claimcenter/cms/public/fnol.form 0800 326 243 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 0800 326 243 end_of_the_skype_highlighting begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 0800 326 243 end_of_the_skype_highlighting http://www.eqc.govt.nz It is likely you will need to lodge a claim with the Earthquake Commission before you contact your insurer. Approach your insurer after making the Earthquake Commission Claim. Make the claim as soon as possible, but you do have a 3 month window. Hang on to any receipts for repairs that you have had to undertake as a direct result of the quake. My understanding from a report this morning is that most Bank branches and ATMs that can be opened and operational will be so in accordance with the Civil Defence recommendations. Major banks will also have contact numbers specifically for those who need to live in CHCH and are affected by the quake.
