danval
Hi all. Just after a bit of advice on the growing fry. They are now about 11 days old and swimming around, still quite small but eating well, numbering between 40 to 50. I was wondering at what age should I change there diet? Currently they are been fed with liquifry, green water and microworms.
ryanjury
They will pick at what the mum is eating as they grow but generally introduce new foods as you think they will fit into their mouths.. Try and feed them on as much variety as you can when they are younger and then they don't turn into fussy adults
danval
Thanks for that Ryan. I do notice the fry having a dash towards food intended for mum but not big enough yet.
ryanjury
Just crush it up really fine and see if they eat it, sometimes adding a bit of water in a spoon and really mushing it up or crushing it then washing the fine crumbs off your finger works. Just be careful you don't overfeed any new food as they probably wont eat much of it initially.
danval
Cool. Will give that a go.
phoenix44
Feed them decap brine shrimp. Mine are now eating them (still!) and bloodworms with soaked colour bits, jbl etc.
ryanjury
Yeah decap is awesome too I forgot about that, I should really get some more just feed it lightly or presoak it so you don't pop the fish..

phoenix44
Awesome! (I use the flash and never have yellow water in my tanks) The mother looks like she is doing well with the fry, hopefully in a few days I'll be able to see that exact same sight! ryanjury
They look like nice pics And the tank looks nice and natural..
danval
Thanks Ryan. Yeah the water is yellow because of the oak leaves but at the moment I am doing a 10% water change every second day as I have no filtration running at the moment but am planning to start filtration when the fry are a bit bigger. phoenix44
A sponge filter or a modified HOB filter will be good. Lots of goodies for the babies to eat on the sponges. To modify a HOB you just take the sponge from a sponge filter and shove it on the inlet of the HOB. Best of luck, and keep us updated. Good to see them being bred. Don't get attached to them like I have though
ryanjury
Yeah definately good to run a sponge filter, they fry will feed off the little bugs and stuff that grow as they become established. Looks like plenty of stuff for them to graze on in there anyway. The brown water is good, it is what they like so don't stress about trying to remove it, plenty of people try and make brown/black water tanks for their south american fish. danval
After some advice from Ryan Jury I decided to remove my female from her fry, and what a nightmare catching her!. Basically the tank consists of a few caves and a deep layer of Oak leaves. She simply went for cover and changed her colouring to match the oak leaves!!!. It was quite stressful not only to me but to Mrs Apisto, not to mention the fry!. Has been a good few days now and the fry have all settled down and recently I have seen them fighting (tail slapping). Hard to tell how many fry but I'm picking at least 20 to 30 ranging in size from about 7mm to about 15mm.
ryanjury
I forgot to give you the best advice.. Chuck a heap of nets in the tank and turn the lights off at night, wait an hour and then setup a red light and catch her in the dark, but glad you got her out and sounds like you have had a good survival rate of fry! danval
Haha. Thanks for that... She was like the Apisto Ninja! Have you ever seen a stick insect blend in with it's surroundings, well she she was like that!
danval
Unfortunately my female apisto died tonight . Fortunately I still have 30 odd fry and the male Apisto still doing fine.

danval
Here are the pics Landlubber. First two of one of the fry i had to catch to get a decent pic and the last one is the environmet they live in. Should really have cleaned the glass! My fish don't appear to be growing at the rate of other breeders of here, namely P44's recent brood. Must be doing something wrong :-? Bilbo
P44's fry grew alot faster than most normal apisto fry do. The only way to get fry to grow quickly like that is to have a good supply of infusoria or paramecium in the tank for them to find and munch on between normal BBS feedings. His fry grew up in a planted tank with algae so had loads of bugs to eat. Dont give up you arent doing anything wrong. Sorry about the female but best of luck with the fry.
