Ymir
a thick slab of wood? (hopefully mac). Needs to be about at least 2 inches thick and approximately 6 foot long and somewhere near wellington. My partner hates the traditional fish tank bases and we have come up with a comprise but I need to find this hunk of wood first.

A macrocarpa sleeper won't be too hard to get.
Ymir
OMG I never thought of a railway sleeper. LOL. Some landscaper I am!!! It needs to be approximately 500mm wide. Two sleepers side by side?

That should work. You could probably even just cut a single one in half if you have a chainsaw and can rig up some way of making a straight cut.
