Water change routine depends on what you want them to do and how big they are?

Young small discus and breeding needs to be daily water changes and big ones.

Bigger discus in planted tanks - 2 50% changes per week is what I do or more if I think the tank is not looking as good as it can.

Low pH

Not pristine for older bigger fish but as with all fish the best you can possibly get. :D

i guess pristine water for any fish is a good thing IMO, but yes, some have more tolerance than others.

the word tolerance is a funny one.

i mean, it generally means they can live in it, thrive as someone said, is another thing:D

no breeding, pairs if they are nice but dont want aggression.

but then again, if you put many in a tank, aggression may go away?

babies mostly, i like growing fish like that.

Small ones are hard work from what I've read, larger ones are more expensive but with discus its usually worth it. There is an article on them in this months PFK magazine, although a lot of it isn't relevant to us as it talks about the differences between european and asian bred discus, there are still some good points in the article.

when I got my batch of 3cm Discus I did 70% w/cs EVERYDAY :o good results but it's too much work so I paid more for larger ones at around 7/8cm lol NEVER looked back lol the waterchanges are the reason why I haven't tried breeding my pair

I got 6 discus and ended up with 2 pairs. These spawn in the community planted tank all the time but my reason for not breeding them is the same as yours - I just simply don't have the time for total daily water changes for months.

My 6 are fine until one pair breeds then all hell lets loose in the tank. The male bales the other 4 up at the far end of the 5ft tank until the eggs hatch the the fry get gobbled up by the harlequins. Peace then resumes for a few days until they spawn again.
