toddy203
About a month ago my male electric yellow (about 7cm) slowly developed small black markings around its mouth. They kind of look a bit like stubble around its mouth! does anyone know why this might have occured and what it means?
ryanjury
Round the mouth I would usually say poor breeding but could be food related.. This is a thread that pretty much does it to death http://fishkeepers.co.nz/forums/viewtop ... =18&t=1554
toddy203
The black marks are only around the mouth, almost like a little goatee, not on the rest of the body at all

herefishiefishie
is this the dom male at all? Frenchy
si_sphinx
It could most likely be food and/or stress related. a good varied diet should get rid of the marks eventually if this is the case.
toddy203
yeah its in the dominant male
herefishiefishie
He is exserting his dominace. The dirty marks that sometimes u see in yellows, don't appear as the fish reached maturity, adolescence.... This may get worse, stay like that or go away with mood swings. All you can do is put up with it, or trade him in. Trick to buying yellows is to look really hard at them when young. Pick out the cleanest looking{body} ones you can find. ps; what are you feeding them? Frenchy
toddy203
thanks, he is being fed tetra colour granules and JBL novo rift sticks, do you think this may cause it? the black stubble has gone away but he mauth and under side of the fish has now got a dark hint to it, it deos seem to change slightly from day to day
herefishiefishie
The colour granules could be high in asthaxathan. That could be a reason for the marking too. Try getting your hands on a food that has spirulina in it. Great for mbunas. Use the spirulina food daily as your base food & the others just a couple days a week. See if that helps. ps; I used to use frozen mysis shrimp for something different for them too. Frenchy
