Ymir
Technically this is not a plant question but algae are a type of plant . I have a calcite sand substrate and lately a blue(about this colour) algae has started appearing on the sand. The Blue algae will grow up the glass from the sand but only a few millimeters then stops. When I clean the tank, the gravel breaks up easily and after a day or two the blue starts to appear again. Currently the algae is growing in two spots but I am worried that it will cover all the calcite in time. The algae does not seem to affect the fish GBA happily sit on it but do not eat it. Any ideas on what it is and how to get rid of it?
supasi
Does it smell musty? Look like this? If so its Cyanobacteria, aka Blue Green Algae. Can be treated with Antibiotics. I suggest you search Cyanobacteria in this forum as there are heaps of articles with peoples experiences. HTH
