Billaney
Hi Everyone Being new I just need to as a question, I've set up a tank to receive some Guppy fry shortly , this will be my second batch, I lost the first so I’m following some very helpful advice this time. I’ve set it up with no filter, a heater set to 25 degree's and a air stone for water correct and oxygenation, my question is even though half the water came from the parents tank do I need some adult fish in this tank to help cycle it BEFORE I put fry in it (I know I'll have to move it then) or is it just ok as is? dan_from_nz
because you are using old tank water that should be enough to cycle it a little but if it is going to be relatively heavely stocked then i would properly cycle it (although bear in mind with no filter you don't have many surfaces for the bacteria
Caryl
Why no filter? A sponge, or box, filter would be good. You could run it in the main tank for a week or so to build up the bacteria before putting it in the fry tank.
Lucid
I have to admit that the no filter was my idea as i have never had one on my fry tanks and just do regular water changes every week to a week and a half, and take the water from the bottom cleaning the muck up. this has been very sucessful and I have had no major losses to date( touch wood). Water is topped up with cold from the kitchen tap which is town supply. I must also say that it increases the hardiness of my guppies , I have ost a few bought from the lfs but not many of my ones i bred. Luke*
Cycling takes about 6 weeks, if you leave adults or fry in there they will die of ammonia poisoning before that time is up. If you add adults they will release more ammonia and thus kill the inhabitants faster. Water changes with no filter will prolong that period. As Caryl said, buy a sponge filter, put it in an already cycled tank for 2 weeks, then put it in with the fry. Doing large weekly water changes should last the fry long enough until your filter is ready to be moved in with them.

B ! seem to remmember a trickle filter on your fry tank? I would deffinatly put a sponge filter of some sought in the tank. Personaly i run those small $20 pump drivin sponge filters, and have them on a low setting, works well. Agreed that old water from previous tanks would be much better.
