andyjd
Question 2 of 50 External filter, was thinking about an Eheim Thermal 2324 My reason behind this: I like Eheim, its well built and reliable, and with the intergrated heater it's one less thing in the tank. Thoughts?

smidey
i haven't owned one but the specs state it will suit a tank that size & eheim are very good. I don't think you could go wrong with that.
phoenix44
I'd go for an eheim 2028 or similar. Or a fluval 405.

phoenix44
Why those models over the one I listed? They are better. more flow etc. the eheim core design is the same, so the amount of media you can put in there is also relatively the same, except in the heater models where you have to leave the bottom free, and in the other ones like the 2028, you can put something in the last layer (under the last basket). I use that space for nitra zorb or something like that... I have both the fluval 405, and the 2028 and have tested dozens and dozens of other filters (eheim and fluval), and the ones I have are the ones I would keep purchasing in the future. also, with the thermo filters, you need to adjust the thermostat on the heater and read the temp on the tank. meaning there is no 28 degree setting for example. you turn the knob, wait for a few hours and then tweak the temp as needed. only the 2326+ come with digital temp controllers, but by the time you shed out that sort of money you are better off buying a 2028 and a 2215 or something like that. andyjd
Sounds like the 2028 might be the ticket then
phoenix44
Don't discount the 405 too fast either. The parts on an eheim are a total killer. To get rid of the green tubing you need to get an expansion set. I had to replace the "aquastop" / flow controller/stopper on my 2028... $60 later... Morcs
Get an FX5... turn down the flow. Huuge capacity - you could go easily twice as long as the others mentioned without cleaning. and then youd also have a suitable filter for your next upgrade. well worth the investment IMHO. ryanjury
You could save an awful lot of money and buy a CF1200 or even one of those 1400 LPH sunsun filters.. There are plenty of people who have had CF1200s running for many years with no issues and you can pick them up brand new for less than $200 Yeah it means you have to have a heater in your tank but they are easy to hide.. However if money isn't an object and you really want an eheim they are great filters
Ira
Better to have the components seperate instead of integrated all in one anyway, IMO. Cheaper, more modular, easier to replace individual components.
