MorknMindy Posted November 7, 2004 Report Share Posted November 7, 2004 We are thinking of changing from an under gravel filter to a canister filter and were just wondering if anyone had any advice on how to go about this. Do we leave the under gavel filter running along with the new canister filter until it has time to build up the good bacteria? Will I need more air stones if I am running a canister filter? What is the best type of canister filter for my tank it’s 4 foot 120L? How often do you have to change the filter medium? How hard is it to clean the canister filter and change the medium? Yes, I recommend you do that, Will I need more air stones if I am running a canister filter? Depends on how many fish you have in there. I would recommend the Fluval. 304 or 404. others may suggest otherwise but I have both and both have been running for the past 5 years. Changing Media. Not too often I have only ever washed my canister filter once every year, Ease of use. Very simple to do and clean as well. You will not need to change the medium unless the sponges are completely full and falling apart (once a year), Carbon will need to be changed if you do use it (once every 3 months). apart from that there is nothing to change Use of Airstone. Not necessary if you place the spray bar above the water line (problem is that it can get quite noisey) Continue use of UG Filter Yes untill bacteria is built up in the canister filter.
