HaNs
Here,s an idea why not use the geckos to start a breeding program, sell any surplus as well as putting some back to the wild ,then in time no body would want to come here and steal them Issues = stuff up gene pool and to breed that amount would take 100's of years at best
repto
get with the program mate. They are native endemic animals.Once in captivity release is not allowed or reccomended for fear of transfering disaeses to wild populations. Also as previously stated localised colonies have distinctive genetic differences. chillz
Release could be feasible if they past disease and parasite screening, which is already done when releases are made from captive facilities and during trans locations. The major issue would be ascertaining where the individual animals were taken from which isn't completely out of the question.

David R
Perhaps we should just allow registered breeders to export them? Would have to very tightly monitored, but it would help take money away from the black market and bring money into the NZ economy.
livingart
there are some good arguements for captive breeding and export geckos are such slow breeders it will make it difficult to get numbers up to satisfy a world market though
HaNs
Will make people more aware and prices will skyrocket plus the black market will become bigger.
