SamH
I wait about the 5 seconds it takes me to pull it out. I usually leave it in for 5 mins, 10 mins to be safe. Or if I'm in a rush, just straight out and into the bucket of water.

smidey
i don't really think you need to leave it in there as it won't increase in temp, it will decrease. as i understand it the element heats the air between the element & glass which then heats the glass & warms the water. the glass may break if it is hot & then submersed into much cooler water but if you take a hot heater out the temp will gradually drop as it cools. the glass may break if the temp reduces instantly rather than gradually. Floater
Once it's off I'd say there is no danger (to the heater) in removing it straight away. I'd be careful what you put it on could damage some surfaces, fire? Unlikely. Just don't grab the hot end.

skippy_49nz
If its running then I would leave it a spell but most of the time they are switched off when the tank is up to temp and the thermostat has kicked in so there is no more heat in the heater than the ambient temp of the water.
