Awesome fish :) I wish we could get other fronts in NZ it would be nice to some some different ones around.

There are some really great variants available nowadays, but one of the main factors is the expensive prices.

I have a friend who is currently breeding several vatiants including:

~ Kigoma

~ Kipili

~ Karilani Golds

~ Moba

~ Ikola

~ Tanzanite

~ Burundi

~ Mpimbwe

~ Samazi

~ Kitumba

~ Zambia

~ Kapampa

[That collection makes my eyes water and I begin to drool  ]

I have heard through the grapevine that there will be even less imported soon as a result of the civil unrest in the region of origin and that would be a crying shame as in my opinion, expensive though they may be, they are truly a stunning member of the aquarium scene.

There are also a lot of breeders in the game who are only in it for the money, crossing species etc trying to develop what they call new strains, again this has been the cause of many problems with both Frontosa and other aquarium species e.g. The Labidochromis caeruleus - Electric Yellow Labs. These fish have been inbred that much that they infact could be labelled Electric White due to the loss of the vibrant yellow colouration once known for :x

As dedicated fish keepers we must ensure suitable breeding practices are followed and that we are not the cause but rather the saviour in regards to the demise of the hobby.

Sorry about the rave but I am very passonate about my fishy friends!

Cheers :bounce:

DID YOU KNOW?

In 99% of cases there is a sure method of telling whether or not the Frontosa on offer is in actual fact one of the 'Blue' variants.

The answer is easy! Simply look at the EYE bar of the fish. If this bar goes over the head, the chances are it is merely a Burundi 6 bar.

If it goes up to the Eye line and then cuts across the bridge of the snout you are fairly well sure to be looking at a true 'Blue' Variant.

Ofcourse if the fish shows 7 bars, then this would be a real point of contention as chances are it is Kigoma 7 bar!

Cheers Again!

The issue with the fronts here is they are not allowed to be imported so the highly inbred burundi we do have with all the broken bars and random barring that pops out is all we can legally get..

I know what you are saying with the yellows, but I also thought there was a naturally occurring strain of white Labidochromis caeruleus, same with how there are blue ones (caeruleus is somehow latin for blue). I think it is very possible the white maybe caused by inbreeding but it could well be the naturally occurring ones..

It is good to know how to tell the fronts apart although I doubt most of us will see any others in NZ.. What would you call a burundi that sometimes throws 7 barred babies?

Actually, there where 3 batches of different Frons around the same time that were Imported, all from different Parents. So they arent too much Inbred.

The bubbas from those (if from the same parents) would be inbred thou.

Mine are from 2 different parents.

I wish we had more Frons! :-(

I guess that depends what version of the stories floating around you believe. I have heard all sorts, but the most likely version is they all came in together on the same batch and were split up from there. I certainly hope this is the case if people are going out of their way to source others they believe are from different imports. There would be no accurate way of determining what exact species/variant the fish on each of those imports (given the quality and poor naming of the fish we receive here) were and it would cause issues with any breeding done from these groups..

I know I can definately trust the person who got them Imported in.

There in lays the answer!

I will NOT buy any Frontosa from unknown breeders, the Kipilli are from the real deal WC strain as were my Tanzanites when I had them [infact I acually collected them from Q when they had served their time.

As for the 7 bars from 6 issue, that I am more open to having had WC Frontosa Tanzanites throw seven bar fry. I am sure this is a genuine mutation that no doubt occurs naturally in the wild. I am also a strong believer that there are actually more 7 bar strains in the lake than are known or rather recognised in the hobby.

The Yellows well that is a definite result of continued mis-management as far as in breeding is concerned in the Australian Aquatic scene. Even the poor Electric Blue has been subject to selective inbreeding to produce phantom strain such as the so-called 'WhiteKinghts' some folks just don't get it hey?
