SamH
I like the idea of shrimp in a planted tank, frolicking in a feild of Glosso, Riccia or Hairgrass. Aren't marine invert. tanks quite hard to setup? What lights?
phoenix44
t5's and Metal halides. boss lady would have a fit if you showed her a quote for the setup. After the first 4 months or so it is usually smooth sailing unless you do one wrong thing
SamH
Clown fish are her achilles heel. I'd be keen on a 60cm cube but what would be the price up from there?
phoenix44
A RSM would be about 2k. probably your best bet.
SamH
RSM? *Chokes-Coughs-and-Splutters* 2k?! I think I could do it cheaper. If "my" lighting guy can get some t5 fittings, then that'd bring it right down.
phoenix44
Red Sea Max. the price on the t5's are marginal. any how.. how is your 3footer getting on, before this topic goes even more off topic!
phoenix44
there ya go buddy!
SamH
Ooo! Where's the front on shot, buddy? Hows the 3 footer going? I only updated four and a half hours ago!
phoenix44
I didn't take one cause it would give away too much
SamH
That's not fair! Now I'm going to have to hide my new tank (I'll get it when I sort out the 3 footer, honest!) and only show to people who come over.
Aquila
What bushy plant is that phoenix? (the one taking up most of the tank) Are there no Ghost shrimps available in NZ? I used to have a couple in Canada....they are clear like the one in the pic SamH provided but they are FW and tropical. Great for a community tank. Would love to get my hands on some again if they are around.
SamH
You'll have to wait until Phoenix smuggles some in then I'm going to take a wild guess, that plant is.... I have no idea! Maybe I would if I had a front shot?
phoenix44
hey, its narrow leaf indian fern that has been given a blasting of blue light to regulate the way it grows. It was then exposed to a whole range of light spectra a make it grow in that way instead of its usual wild manner. As far as I know there are no FW tropical shrimp that are available for the aquarium trade.

Well worth the result though, looks good Poor shrimpies Maybe the NZ FW one can be acclimated slowly to a warmer temp....
phoenix44
apparently stella (native queen here) says that they will die in higher temps as they are used to the cold water streams here in NZ. need a cooler to keep them happy in NZ summers in a tank! SamH
*Sigh* Might have to make a cold water glosso tank then
N1CK
*Sigh* Might have to make a cold water glosso tank then If your gonna make a coldwater tank you might as well stick a large powerhead (or 2) and make it a hillstream loach tank :bounce: :bounce:
SamH
In a 31.5L tank? That's a recipe for disaster! Nitrites are rising slowly. In between 1 and 3 (2?) this morning. Hopefully much higher this avo.
SamH
:bounce: They have spiked. At first, I wondered why it hadn't turned pink. Came back in a few mins and it was a deep purpley pink! We have Nitrites people! Once they drop, it'll be all go. First I'll move the BN's and then the seven Platies a week later. Oh, and I must remember to add a CO2 bottle and replace the tubes
SamH
Not much has changed. Nitrites are way down, added some activiated carbon (no, you haven't won yet Phoenix!) and took some photos of the tank on different angles with a low ISO. Ordered some plants and airline on Friday, hoping for a Monday or Tuesday delivery. Need to finish of the coke so I can use the bottle too. Any constructive critsism? phoenix44
can you try a shiny black background? PS= i like how clear the water is. good ol carbon
SamH
It depends, can you send me said shiny black background? The water was actually far clearer before I did the water change and added carbon. And even though I have the HOB running at full speed, there's still alot of muck on the surface. Mainly algae but some other stuff too. :-? Zev
Did you turn the room lights off when you took the pics? I have a post somewhere that shows the lengths Amano goes to to take his tank shots - will see if I can find it. Carbon is not going to polish your water. phoenix44
I have no black background, so i found an old silk black shirt that im going to wrap around some poly and use that for photo-ops!
Zev
Ha - found it http://www.aquatic-plants.org/articles/ ... es/18.html First pic described as: This is Mr. Amano taking pictures of the aquarium. It was very interesting to see the process. details here: http://www.aquatic-plants.org/articles/ ... index.html
