JK
Hi team Keen for your input on the following: I have a 120ltr tank similar to the AquaOne with in-hood filteration. This filter seems to be coping ok but stil have my doubts over it so would like to add some additional filteration and well thats gotta be a good thing. Not really sure what my options are but have been thinking the following far... Either: - internal filter - those cannister types that sit in the corner. Seems to be a heap of them on trademe but not sure what is good and what's not. I have the space in the tank for it and don't think I would mind too much the visual impact as long as its not too big. Maybe 200mm by 100mm by 100mm would be ok. - external cannister - I understand that I should be looking for a flow rate approx 4-5 times tank capacity so 600-700 would be ideal. Although given I have the existing hood filter I may not need quite this much. One disadvantage I see is that I'd need to drill some wholes in the hood of the tank to get the pipes in to the tank. any other ideas? Not keen to spend a whole lot of options so a simple, effective and cheap option could be the winner. Thanks JK
LYNDYLOO
I have an Aquaone AR980, Aquaone AR620T and an Aquaone 620 :bounce: On all of these Tanks I have disposed of the Hood Filter and replaced it with an Aquaone CF1200 I run the Spray Bar of the Externals through the Top of the Hood Filter, under the Lid. I now have the Hood Filter filled with Filter Wool, the Spray Bar sits on top of the Filter Wool, which gets changed every so many months. I found the Hood Filter to be a right pain in the you know what  No need to drill any Holes, I just made the Gap where the Pipes go through bigger, with the help of a Stanley Knife and a pair of Pliers Lynda
Ira
Yup, I second the CF1200.
Morcs
CF1200 aswell If its a bigger tank, add a HOB filter. My new 4ft is running a CF1200 Canister, with an Aquaone clearview 800 which is actually a really good filter. Cheap too and creates good oxygen exchange. wagonman
LYNDYLOO, Can you post up sum pics of how you have it set up.
JK
Thanks guys but cant fit the HOB as the tank as a hood so no real way to set it up without modification / butchering the hood. I do like the idea of the external filter suggested (CF1200) but again hood modification required (albeit minor) and the CF1200 is probably a bit overkills for my needs right now and in the medium term at least. Might pop down my local store and see what internal options are avail.
LYNDYLOO
Wagonman: Will try and get some piks for you JK: Mods to the Tank Hood are easy az, I did the AR 620 on me own so that tells you just how easy it is. HFF have CF1200's at resonable prices and they're happy to ship. Sorry wasn't HFF, it was Wonderworld in Rotorua CF1200 $132.

darkfur
you can always make your own internal air-powered filter. Take a plastic container (I like the ones they sell vitamins such as omega 3 in) and drill lots of little holes in the base - make it like a colander. Drill a hole in the lid that snugly fits some airline, and also colander-ify the lid. Fit airline tubing so that it goes down to the base then fill with your choice of filter material eg carbon (put in pantyhose first), bionoods, zeolite, filterwool. I have seen chopped plastic straws used in lieu of bionoods, and aquarium gravel makes a suitable biofiltration bed too. If you've done it right, air goes down the tube to the bottom, then percolates back up through the filter material dragging water with it as it goes and back up out the holes in the top of the lid. Easy peasy and cheap enough for scrooge. And you can make whatever size/shape you want.
Morcs
Id remove the hood to run a canister. If its an aquaone, then just remove the filter, leaving the front part of the hood with the lights.
wagonman
^^^ why?? would it not look better with the hood filter left on but modified (maybe cutting out abit of the back of it) to allow for the canister tubing.
