diver21
well im setting up a new tank for my mother and she wants to have marble chip as her substraite. after goping to the LFS she was told that they dont stock it as they dont recommend it as it raises the PH too much. if she was to ger marble chip in the tank how much would it raise the ph by? shes planning a 800x400x500 tank stocked with a pink kissing gourami and 2 bristle noses plus what ever else she has planed.... as a side note do you think that the tank is big enough for the kissing gourami? ryanjury
It will raise the ph, it is ideal for africans, not so good for other fish of course they will adjust but it wont be good for them long term
diver21
and what if there was a bit of wood in there? would that be enough to keep the ph down to something more suitable for the fish or would the marble over power it
alanmin4304
The wood will make the water more acid and that will put even more calcium into solution and make the water even harder. Calcium carbonate is almost insoluble in other than acid conditions. I have a tank with three LARGE chunks of marble and it has been good for many years, containing a mixture of community fish and plants.
