Morcs
Im searching for a stand for a 4ft tank (120 x 45 x 45 ish) LFS quoted me outrageous prices (500-900) Im not able to make one myself... Does anyone have one I can buy? or Anyone know a stock product at bunnings or mitre 10 or something that will serve the purpose? or Anyone know a good workshop or something that can make one? Im upgrading my 3ft to a 4ft with minimal cost...
whetu
Funny... I was just looking at cabinets on Trade Me and thinking some of them would make excellent tank stands. I can't link to them here (site policy) but I will send you a PM with a couple of examples (if I can find them again!) Disclaimer: I'm not the seller for any of the cabinets and I haven't seen them in real life so I can only go by the photos and descriptions! I strongly suggest going and having a close look at them to see if they are suitable for what you want, and especially checking them out for structural integrity - strong joints, no wobbles, etc.
Cricketman
peice of pie to make your own stand. i got quoted $1.69/m of untreated 2"x4", which you make the structure out of, then clad it with whatever you like, mdf, ply, rough sawn texture 2000 (at $86 a peice!!! i nearly had a heart attack) basically take everything you know about building something square/ rigid. it not that hard, if you like ill email you a template i am going to use when i get round to building mine. whetu
Here's a pic of my tank stand. I could build you something similar if you like - have sent you a PM. It has the following dimensions L: 1340 D: 450 H: 760 Unfortunately I built mine in a bit of a hurry and didn't pay as much attention to the details as I should have... yours would look much tidier if you take me up on the offer. Neon
You made that yourself Whetu? I'm impressed. Your plants are looking nice and healthy too.
whetu
Thanks neon - I didn't really build it ... It's a kind of modular thingie and you just put together the bits you want. The basic structure has no nails at all! The only skill required is putting the drawers and doors on, which is why my drawers are crooked!  But by golly it's the strongest structure you could imagine. I would happily jump up and down on it (if there wasn't already a fish tank on it).
lmsmith
I bought some black slotted steel from bunnings. You can cut them to length with a hacksaw, then buy packets of bolts and triangles to give it strength. They're really easy to make, and you can screw painted MDF panels to the outside, pop on some doors and you're done.
