Simian
Hi all, my pearls bred, it was pretty cool to watch for the first time. Question is, what colour are fertile eggs? there are hundreds of eggs, 24 hrs old most are whitish, some are fungused but most arent yet. Shouldnt they be black or yellow/orange? Maybe daddys shooting blanks
Adrienne
Assuming that gourami look after their eggs the same as fighters then if there are still eggs there and the parent is tending to them then they are most likely fertile. IME with fighters the males eat the unfertilised eggs and the ones that fungus. Most always they appear to me to be whitish until the tails start to detach. Don't know if this is any help to you but I hope so
Simian
Thanks for the reply. There are a heap of fungused ones this morning and the male appears to have lost interest. I did some research on teh net last night and found an article. Credit To Brian Cole, M.S., Clyde S. Tamaru, Ph.D., Richard Bailey, B.A. Sea Grant Extension Service/Aquaculture Development Program School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology Christopher Brown, Ph.D. Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology April 1999 In addition females have also been observed releasing large numbers of unfertilized eggs. Rather than representing a conditioned of heightened spawning readiness, spontaneous egg release is more likely a method of rapidly eliminating over ripened eggs from the ovaries (Pollak et al. 1978). This can be associated with large numbers of oil droplets on the waters surface. This may be the case in my instance as there were a reasonable amount of oil droplets apparent on the surface. This is an old pair I have had for a long time and this is the first time they have spawned for me (they were in a very active community tank). Maybe the old girl needed a clean out before she produces properly. I will condition them again and see how I get on next time.

Simian
Normally White Eggs are Unfertilised  Yeah thats my experience also, but every fish is different and I haven't delt with Anabantoids very much. I tried spawning them out of curiosity really.

ryanjury
Most of the eggs are all the same colour initially it does vary between species but some are usually white or an off white type colour, they will darken if fertilized and go white if unfertilized..
